Nope..!

Can put 1k out and get 1-5 calls.

Try a different area mate, don't get disheartened too early on. Some days you get nil, then others you can hit the jackpot.

Canvassing always worked for me, l have no fear of knocking doors and talking with people as I am a fairly relaxed and conversational person, The key is to be polite, professional, never pushy or desperate sounding, but brief.

I also found it beneficial to meet prospective customers face to face to gauge what they were like, and they me.

I did try leaflets, but I got virtually zero response.

Johnny Is right... it can be difficult but Keep knocking mate.. you’ll have good days and bad days.

Change the area and maybe the time you go out if you’re finding nobody is home...

All the best

I have good response from mine .  I have tried various types of flyers ie glossy brochure types etc.  but now i print my own on card.
at the moment i get around 2 % success.  I only target specific types of properties.
I will add that I have been doing this job for 26 yrs so i have plenty of work.  so I put just 30 flyers a day out when I have finished cleaning . so far this year I have gained 18 new customers from flyers alone . however door knocking is the fastest way, and if i was starting out I  would door knock.  on both methods  I only assume that 70% will be good customers. sometimes its more , its all about numbers .

I have found that the best days for canvassing are:

Week day evenings, Mondays-Fridays. Peak hours in summer are 7-9 pm summer time.

Golden days are Sundays around 10am-12pm. Then in the evenings at 6-9 pm.

Use your common sense, canvass when you will likely prefer to be sitting at home! That way you will find people in.

Saturdays have never been a productive canvassing day for me.

When you call simply ask if they would like a regular window cleaning service! get to the point.

and bash through the doors.

In my opinion the best and quickest way to gain work is to canvass yourself,by doing so you can target the houses you want to clean, good access,no garages to go through,no long alley ways to get your hose around the back,no gates to have to text them to open, only to find there locked ,no dog poop in the garden.
This cannot be achieved if you use a canvasser,or by dropping leaflets.
But I'm ten years down the road and have learnt the hard way

I paid £44 for 5000 drop cards and have been surprised at the response. I have put just over 500 out and got 10 enquiries, out of them I got 9 customers and cleaned their windows there and then.
The one I did not get I could have if I dropped the price but I was not in the mood that day for "I can't afford that, I am a pensioner" I said thanks for your time and walked off to his surprise.

This village and the next one is a "No cold calling area", the police came round just before I started my self employment and dropped packs in our doors which included door stickers. Everyone around here seems to have them on their doors.
I also think I would be rubbish at door knocking, I hate rejection especially when they are rude too :)

I do put one of my flyers in the local shop for 50p a week, last week this brought me in £95 from a one off job, inside and out.

Those no cold calling stickers dont mean anything and have absolutely no legal staus whatso ever.

They are advisory only, and simply state that the householder can call the police if you dont leave the property when asked to, which already is the case regardless if the sticker is displayed or not.

I have never come across anyone on my cold calling & canvassing days use thier sticker to tell me off for asking if they would like a window cleaner or not. They probably forgot its even on the door.

I only use flyers.

I wouldn't knock on people's doors. I hate cold callers.

Do onto others and all that.

I agree with your last sentence. However:

I knocked on thousands of doors when canvassing, and could count on one hand the number of aggressive responses I got from householders.

The key is to be polite and relaxed but to be brief. Above all, listen to and respect the householder and if they say they aren't interested or tell you to go away, remain polite, smile, thank them for their time and leave.

If I needed or wanted to expand my business, I would choose to canvass over leaflets or flyers all day long.

Going back to your last sentence, I get people canvassing for all sorts of things. I almost never subscribe to whatever they are offering, but am always polite and even have a conversation with them, ending with a 'wishing you all the best'.

Yes I agree with treating others the way I would like to be treated.

John

Yes they do. They mean the people who live there don't appreciate cold calling, what part of don't knock don't you understand?

I understand what you are saying but they do have a right to not want people disturbing them , I wouldn’t be happy with you knocking on my door if I had a sighn on it stating that I wouldn’t knock but would just put a card - flyer through the letterbox but then you have the no junk mail stickers as well so you cannot win 😂😂😂😂

Just going back to my earlier comment about respecting householders' wishes, I would not knock a door that has a 'No cold callers' sign, just as I would not put a leaflet through a letterbox bearing a 'No junk mail' notice.

Mate, we're British, I'm surprised you got any aggressive responses to be honest. Doesn't mean people weren't annoyed by you chapping at their door.

I'm polite when telling JWs to go away and leave me alone, doesn't mean I'm happy about them approaching me in my own home.

I'm sorry but if anyone comes knocking at my door after 8pm selling whatever in summer or winter, I'm not interested,
I just think thats to late in the evening to be calling at peoples homes, especially the elderly, just my opinion.

I'm a JW myself, and apply the exact same principles when witnessing as I do when canvassing.

When in the UK people's responses between both situations were like night and day.

I am in Ireland now and most of my customers are locals. Interestingly their general attitude towards witnessing in my experience is much more cordial and hospitable.
