Its been a while since I have had to purchase a new controller .
Always had Varistream in the past both the old dial type and the digital display.
Are these still one of the best as there seems to be so much more choice now.
What are your recommendations

Spring version 11 in any of it's various guises.

Only the other day i got a spring v11 after using varistreams  for the last 13+ years. Not much difference really although i like the spring controller showing actual battery voltage  instead of just the 3 bars on the varistream. Also i think the v11 more controllable over setting the flow and DE pressure (you can fine tune it more, however i've only been using it for 2 days.)
The only thing i dont like is you seem to have to hold the off/enter button for about 3 seconds before it will turn off unlike the varistream which is instant, it does turn on quicker then turning off though.

Yes to switch off there is a need to push and hold the enter button. The reason is because the enter button accesses a number of functions. battery voltage flow rates, accessing and setting calibration to name a few. So in order for the processor to know what action to perform there is a need to differentiate the power off from the other functions.

When I had a digital spring controller I was forever faffing with it, re calibrating etc.. ..... For me ( at least ) simple is best. I don't  see the need for a controller to do anymore than control the speed of the pump. Some make theirs with parts readily available in Maplin's or ebay etc. I bought a cheapo ebay one for convenience. Think it was £35. On/off , analogue dial to adjust speed ( flow ) and digital voltage display ........... all I need.

They also reduce the ampage drawn from the battery amongst other things, making your battery last longer. I don’t think a cheap diy controller does this.

If you calibrate correctly, and maybe add a few more increments to allow for height and/or cold temperature to make it less sensitive, you shouldn’t get a problem. It’ll also save your pump pressure switch as it won’t be needed.

That’s my understanding of them anyway. I would struggle without them.

I don't believe the more expensive ones will save your battery or pressure switch any more than these do. If you set these to half power, it will draw half the amps. If the pump is constantly on, and not cycling on/off every 2 seconds, the switch won't burn out.  I could be wrong.

Buy a spare one and never have any downtime due to breakages. Even if your supplier will repair or replace yours for free, it will still take a day or two get a replacement to you. Better to have a spare.

6 months using with the 24v electric reel and no problems. Total control aswell, from slow to full speed.

I've been using them for years, without issue; my shurflo pumps must be about six-years-old too.

No problems what-so-ever.
