Harsh winter this year.
« on: February 13, 2018, 08:18:13 am »
The cold has been relentless this year, cant remember one this bad for the last 8 years.

I wander how many have fallen by the wayside? It's probably culled a few non toughened. Hats off to my wife, I give her the choice when it's real bad and she always insists on grafting.

Cant wait fro spring, the best time of year for me, not cold or roasting hot. It's going to be a much welcomed occurrence.

Yeah it does feel like its been a long one. Even down here in relatively balmy surrey.

The truth be told, we have just been used to relatively mild winters over the last few years.

Over here in the west of Ireland, it has rained nearly every day since the beginning of December, with some strong winds thrown in. It's normal here though so we just have to deal with it.

We've had some colder days too, but give me that over wet  and windy any time!

I've had a lot of downtime, but fall by the wayside? Not a chance! I've just started my 22nd year in this game, with plenty
more to come.

i dont think its been that bad(well it hasnt here in the north west)..nothing compares to the winter of 2009-2010 when we had heavy snow here for about a month...i was a wfp newbie back then too which didnt help!(10 frozen barrels in my old kangoo van!) ;D

i know some of you have had a few weeks of snow but virtually nothing here apart from the odd day and then its not been heavy...

We are fortunate here in North Cheshire, climate is not as extreme as in Yorkshire /North Wales /Scotland etc.
Yesterday though I went to my work in North Wales and encountered my first real snow of the year.
Still really looking forward to spring though, my 60 year old joints are feeling it now

Too true.
It's not really bad until your van tank turns into a big ice cube and your storage tank in the garage freezes too!

I do try mate, and mostly I do.

Went out last night to turn the water off and realised it needed turning on, so that's my excuse.

I'm a busy bee though mate, gym twice a week(mon and fri) kickboxing now on Wednesdays and being dad in between, soon as i get home my 5 year old jumps on me. was playing with the martian sand till 8pm last night.

Also made a promise to start cooking and have been doing well, last night I made courgette omelettes and a healthy ice cream for my boys addiction to it, this way he gets some nourishment whilst enjoying as treat.

I try to get in bed by 10pm as the kids are up early so I can get some decent Z's, trying to fit recovery in amongst it all is a challenge.

Must admit though you do inspire me as you seem to have a great round and I believe its due to your organisation and commitment to your job. I am pretty good though, always getting things done.
I worked 7 hours on Sunday to get a huge nursing home done and its now on the books. A £300 quider.

Cold?

Get over it. When did you last have to put a heater in your van to prevent it all frosting up?

Nippy perhaps. Nothing more.

It's no different from other years.  Could have been worse.

However winter started early this time so feels like it's lasting an age

It's not been anything out of the ordinary, but we have had it a bit easier in the south-east.  A few delayed starts until the tools unfroze, and a few wet and windy days when I sacked it off.  I haven't done much today but I'm approaching a part of my round where the workload is slacker anyway.  I need to do something about that when late Feb/early March arrives.

Jan was worst month I've experienced. Half of the month was Rain, wind or snow, lost up to 2 weeks work I think.

Not been a bad winter at all here in the East of Scotland, I don't mind the cold crisp mornings and blue sky, generally if it's milder the more chance there is of wind and rain.
