daily battery requirements
« on: February 06, 2018, 11:54:24 am »
I run 2 shurflo pumps for around 3 hours continuous each day and 2 24volt reels for around 10 minutes use each day.
My current 1 month old 120ah numax is goosed and has been refunded.

I need a new one and its going to be an AGM.

How much draw from the battery will I be using given the estimation above?

The suppliers are trying to sell me a trojan 75ah, then told me i will need two seperate batteries for the pumps and reels. An now suggesting a 100ah deep cycle agm for both.

What will I need for a day amp wise given the running times of pumps and reels, I dont want to needlessly overspend as I probably need a new charger too as have just found out my current one is only 4a.

115 amp battery,

Bench charged every night and you will be fine. That’s what I use.

It’s connected up to ansplot charge relay, but I don’t do enough mileage some
Days, so I just reel out an extension cable to my van every night. Takes seconds, and has been fine  for 6 months now.

I use a 115ah leisure battery which you know is hooked up on solar charge (winter is now boosted from alternator, as this winter has been poor). I have a spare backup 115ah leisure battery which also powers my bilge pump for trolley which isnt used often. But i do have a seperate 24ah battery which my electric reel is connected too.

If i was to run a 2 man setup, i have a smaller 100psi pump with a 3amp draw that i would connect to my spare leisure battery and connect my reel to the same one i currently use.   So if i went 2 man, 3 batteries would be my set up, dont know if thats overkill.

But basically mate, just work out how much amps are being used per day to determine the size of the battery you need and then how often do you want to be charging them.

Go and get a 115 ah leisure battery from Halfords for your pumps Paul.
You will probably need another battery for the hose reels too, although I can't advise as I don't use electric reels.

The label on the pump should tell you how many amps it uses and depending upon the motor used for the reel, it may or may not say.

Roughly pending pump it will draw between 3 n 5 Amps per hour. So if your running 2 pumps from one battery thats 6-10 amps per hour times your 3 hours of usage.   Then the drain from the motors on the reels. Thats gonna drain one battery quite quickly in a couple of days.

Yet you know yourself what you n the wife have been using from your current battery and how often you have needed to charge them.

My 27ah battery for the electric motor usually lasts about a week before it needs a full charge. Thats if i dont use the alternator or solar to top it up between times.
So if i was you, stick to 2 115ah deep cycle batteries for each pump and buy a seperate battery for the reels.  Mine is a sit down lawnmower type battery.

the pump says 6amp and the reels say 13.5amp but that's for 24v so i presume around 8amps when running 12v.

I reckon pumps on continuous 3-4hrs and reels probably get 30, 10-20 second bursts each per day.

So reels around 2 amps per day and pumps between 36 and 48 amps per day, wont be more but possibly/probably less.
