Do you mean the reel just turns too freely and quickly now faster than the hose unreels causing the hose to not pack tightly to it ?A few months ago somebody had a similar problem as did I.I have no idea what a pure freedom reel looks like, mines a van mounted pro loc metal reel, but perhaps you can do something similar.........................The answer was to zip tie some foam pipe lagging to the metal frame so it rubbed against the outside of the drum that holds the hose thus creating the "friction" you mention .................. it solved the problem for me and has worked a treat ever since.
Barry Scott, have you not got a braking device on the prolock reel? My reel cracked and they replaced the reel rather than repairing locking/braking mechanism.
Cox reels have adjustable tension brakes to prevent free wheeling, they're not cheap but I wouldn't consider any other manual reel.
Sturdy?Plastic fittings, cheap crap screws. Doesn't sound sturdy to me.
I too have a cox reel.not cheap but they are really good quality...no over run and no plastic spindle...... virtually effortless to reel in...
