Van sole trader VAT
« on: January 10, 2018, 08:22:16 pm »
What do you guys as sole traders do when coming to buy a van .
Previous years I have bought private sale vans so no vat to be paid.
Obviously the newer van you get the more likely you are to have to pay vat.
As a sole trader it seems to be money down the drain if you have to pay vat without being able to claim it back .

As a sole trader you just have to take the hit. There's also plenty of advantages to being a sole trader.

I was thinking of leasing a van like Dazmond but again you are hit with the vat every time you make a payment.

I buy vans with 30000-  40000 miles , Private sale , a few years old then sell them when they have done 70,000 or so.
Now I would like something a little newer with less miles .

Remember your not losing all the vat.

Yous still claim it as a taxable expense. Obviously it’s just not as advantageous as getting the full amount back if you were vat registered.

just put some of your work up to cover the monthly rental and dont worry about it. :)

this is what i did......and when any customers moaned i told them it was to pay for my new van as i was sick to death of driving about in old vans that were unreliable....they understood. :)
price higher/work harder!

The majority of stuff we buy will have vat its just not separated on the price, therefore I don't know why pointing it out on the
price of a van is putting you off, its the overall price of the van that's important.
Even the price of a used van that doesn't include vat will be determined by the new Van price with the vat included so in a way
you will still be paying a percentage of it back to the original vat payer/seller.

even if you pay the vat now and decide to grow some balls later on and go vat reg you can claim back vat on a van purchase for up to 4 years as long as you still own it.

VAT is just the governments way of making the small/sole trader pay more income tax. :( :o

No it’s not!  VAT is value added tax and added at the current rate of 20% to virtually every item we purchase unless VAT exempt or lower rated.  It has nothing to do with the Government targeting small / sole traders at all.  VAT targets every man , woman and child in the Country .

Yes VAT is on every purchase any one makes.
but the £3000 Vat I paid on my Van and the £2000 I spent last year at Gardiners and Pure Freedom was all subject to non reclaimable VAT I would not run a van (no VAT on second hand cars), nor would I be buying Gardiner equipment, If I was not a window cleaner, so my statement that VAT is an extra tax on small businesses is correct.

Never paid vat on a van yet, always managed to avoid. 👍It doesn't take big balls to give money away for nothing- just a small brain!

The obvious answer is to buy private.

There might not be many about without vat and you might have to travel but I'm sure they exist.

Not about growing balls
If someone wants to stay as a sole trader it doesn't make them a coward
It's just a choice

I'm not good at spotting good second hand vehicles and I think many would agree on here that vans are mostly a more dicey prospect than cars on the second hand market
I'm on my second leased van
Love New vans and I'm prepared to pay for them
I doubt I'll ever buy a second hand van

Well that's fair enough. You are prepared to pay a premium for a new van plus the vat. The OP wanted to save money on vat, the answer is to buy private used.

Personally I would always buy low mileage vans 2-3 years old from now on and private if poss. You get a van that will last almost as long as a new one and probably pay half the price over the years.

Thank god this is a wi dy forum and not a biz forum

You pay vat on rv’s Computers and virtually every item you buy high street shops add the vat into the price as they mostly deal with the general public who are not  vat reg. the tax is aimed at us all
