would you buy this second hand van?
« on: December 22, 2017, 05:18:53 pm »
As title.

Transit connect 148,000

https://www.tradervan.co.uk/used-ford-transit-connect-brentwood-essex-1411579

My old ford escort had 146,000 but 17 years old!

I think ford connects 2nd hand seem dear compared to say citoren berlingo, fiat doblo

I'm a complete numpty on most things 😁 but clueless on mechanics.

All I could do is get AA or RAC to check.

Nothing is infallible I suppose 😐

The thing is Lee, it may have been regularly serviced, but that is a lot of wear and tear on the other components with that mileage.
I've got a 2004 T230 lwb connect which has been excellent. But it's now at the end of its working life, for me anyway. It needs new sills, brakes and has just got some electrical problem going on. It'll take me hundreds to get it through the next mot. It starting to look really tatty. So I'm upgrading to a newer van.
If you can't afford much, go for lower mileage and good service history. The Connect is a good workhorse. Can you get something newer?

no far to dear , i would be looking for a old expert (old shape) 1.9d there flat as a fart but will do i good job and are built proof for 2k you will get a one owner low miles with full history and a pocket full of cash back

ive seen the faster hdi experts go for around  900-1600 pounds all around the 100k or lower and seviced to death face book selling pages are good for these plus you can meet the owner and test drive them

this i s where i would be looking on that budget

That mileage would put me right off.  My last van was beyond economical repair around 130,000 miles. Although it looked a bit battered, I did pay to have it maintained properly too.
I wouldn't want to rely on a van that had done so many miles, but if I had a small fleet of vans and a larger business, it might be OK as a spare for when newer vehicles are being fixed.

Was thinking ford connect; Citroen berlingo, fiat doblo, Renault kangoo, Peugeot partner, Vauxhall combo.

Thanks for the reality check everyone 😁

you will get a decent mileage and year doblo for that budget.  A Connect will always hold its value more then any of the mentioned vans.

At half the price it might be ok  ;)

I would second the 1.9d expert/dispatch/scudo.

I had one with 300k on, slow as a tortoise but very reliable.

I bought a later 1.6hdi one after and it was a dog, no end of issues.

I can't praise the Doblo enough, best van I ever had! Example... I paid £3250 for an '07 when it was 3 years old. Ran it for 5 years trouble free and sold it for 2k. 5 years trouble free work hourse for £1250.
Comfortably Numb!

Thanks Wolfgang 👍

Hope I have your luck if I get one.

Thanks for tips on expert, but to be honest I don't want a van that size.

I'm a one man band using 10 x 25 litre barrels, hose reel, pump box and slx 25.

Thanks everyone

Merry Christmas and happy new year 👍💃🍺

As per the others - mileage is way too high.

The other thing is that there's something not right with the suspension. It seems to be sitting high at the back rather than low at the front.  That would put me off even if the van had lower mileage. I would be looking to see if the dented/damaged sills indicate suspension damage.

IMHO if you are considering a Connect then look at either the T220 or T230 LWB.

Also ensure that alternator light goes off on startup and that the instrument panel lights and interior lights work properly.

The old experts pre 2007  are not that big at all, similar size to a connect..they are significantly smaller than the newer 2007 on, I've had both shapes and the newer one was massive in comparison.

Dont bother wth that one Lee, its 12 years old, and has been far and done many miles. You could be just buying someone else’s trash. As SD says, go for the Berlingo/Partner or Dispatch Expert. I had a 51 plate Berlingo,1.9 XUD engine, bullet proof as long they get a service every year.  I had a Dispatch after the Berlingo, and it had the same engine in. It was a bit underpowered in the Dispatch with it being a bigger van and non turbo engine.  If you go for one of those, get the 2.0 hdi  turbo engine, which will give you a bit more power.  The Berlingo/Partner later models came in  a 1:6 hdi engine, without a turbo, but  they were  not as reliable as the old 1.9 XUD.
Cheers Rich

I disagree, they look smaller because they taper inwards slightly at the roof. Definitely bigger than a Connect

What you need to be wary of with the 'old' Dispatch, Scudo and Expert (pre 2006) is under body corrosion. The original Berlingo did have lower body galvanisation to about 6" above the lower door line, so the underneath body wise should be OK.  This didn't include suspension subframe etc.

Lee, I just sold my old swb connect 07 plate with 98K miles to my brother for 1K. I had it 11 years and all was good until the last 6 months (new clutch and starter motor and 2x sills welding); I couldn't complain.
He is a freelance MOT tester and does about 500 miles a week, but I know he'll look after it. I loved that van but needed something bigger.
I bought a Toyota Hiace (bit big for you) for 3.5K. Full service history, one owner all keys and paperwork, all mots, looks absolutely mint, high mileage though. At the moment I am well chuffed, just finished fitting it out.
I think when you are buying at that price, it's a bit of a lottery and you have to do your homework as best you can.
I liked the connect, and I think if you basically buy a good one, then any bits that go wrong can be fixed fairly cheaply.

I sold my old connect with 240,000 miles on the clock for 1k . Full service history, well looked after but too small for me
