How did the old shiners use a scrim and chamois to clean a window? There must be a few old-timers still around who use this method from time to time.

I started out in 76 using a leather and a scrim.  It was so slow compared to using a blade.  But then there didn't seem to be the rush to get things done like there is today.  45pence per 2/3 bed terraced house.  I used to earn about £6 a day
Now the blade seems slow compared to wfp.

So what was the technique?

we used to buy chamois  off cuts and make our own rat tail mops use wet with a damp scrim that you used to have to boil for about 3 days then leave in the bucket as a sill cloth for about a month then it was good to use on the glass, also used to use a broom head as an adaptor always remember 5 am and as you cleaned the shop front the water would run right up your arm nice especially in the colder months

Yes chamois rat tail mops and scrim those were the days. Then them new fangled squeegees came, ah they will never take off

Wow! Seems like an eterninty away now but as I recall I cleaned with the chamios and polished/buffed with a scrim

in my office i still have my dads account book for 1969-70, on a good week he would earn about £15 to £20 a week, my mum said as their rent was  £5 a week they were on quite good money
