Im wondering why ?
« on: October 12, 2017, 06:48:18 pm »
Everybody else seems to run the flow controllers at around 50 , and i have to run mine at 85 and always have .
I assume that i have the same setup as a lot of people .....

Shurflo 100psi , 8000-441-138 , 3.78 lpm pump
100 m microbore going to gardiner red fans
Usual 3 button controller that all suppliers seem to sell .
At 85 flow i get about 1.7 lpm through the fans.

The only thing i can think is that some of you have the other shurflo that is a higher lpm rate .
Anybody shed any light please , what  do you guys run ?
I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

Its your pump, I have a Shurflo 100psi 7lpm pump, the controller runs at around 38 which gives me about 2lts per minute
at the brush.

I did not know they did one that high , I was just starting to think that as my pump is well over 10 years old it was starting to get a bit tired !
Where do you get the pump you have , i would like to check the specs on that ... Cheers for info   :)

yep as dry clean says its your pump...also not sure if  the fan jets will restrict flow a bit (never used them myself)

To be accurate it actually 6.4lpm, Sureclean in Northern Ireland sell them,

They do restrict a lot , but i cant stand pencils , I bet Dryclean runs pencils too !
I am more than happy with 1.7 L through the fans , its ample , I just thought that lowering my rate on the controller would mean less amp draw for me , but when you go to a higher flow pump it means a raise in the amps anyway , thats why i need to see specs for pumps .

Red fan jets can  be run  between 60-75 settings on controller to get the best out of them.
Alex recommends 75 if my memory is correct.
I use both pencil and fan jets depending on job I'm doing at the time.

Mines a Pure freedom pump stamped 6ltr per min, guessing that's the max but I run it on 40 / 99 (2.4ltrs per min) for maintenance cleans and ramp it up to 60 (3.6ltrs per min) for F/S/G work.

I appreciate those figures would be in perfect conditions with no restrictions but it might give you an idea.

Yes pencils only, that said I do put my water through the DI vessel on demand which would restrict the flow slightly.

We have a 3.8lpm pump and a 5.2lpm pump on the van. The 3.8lpm came from Williamson pumps as their answer to reduce pump cycling and burnt out pressure switches in the days before they launched their first analogue flow controller.

From time to time I end up with the 3.8 lpm pump. I have to run it on 7 (Varistream) to get the same flow I do with my Varistream on 4 using the 5.2lpm pump.

The only difference in the pumps as the angle of the cam being shallower on the 3.8lpm pump. Both pumps draw the same current.

Hold the brush out in front of you if your getting a distance of about 15 ft you’ve got a good flow that’s what I use,it should be something in the region of 70-80 on the flow controller.

This is what i was thinking with the current draw , that it would be higher for a higher rated flow pump , as Spruce has just said , it would appear that the 2 more common models draw the same .

As said , I dont have an issue with the pump other than age , the 1.7 L that i get is more than enough for me , when i run the pump at 85 it uses between 4 and 4.5 amps , if i knock it back to 75 the amps drop to 3 or 3.5 ,  so in other words i guess what i am really looking for is the lowest amp consuming pump i can get my hands on !

Nathankaye got hold of one of the China pumps for his trolley , from the specs i saw it seemed to only pull 3 amps , when i looked at the listing it only had a rating of watts consistent with the Shurflo 3.8 L model , this would convert to the same ampage ?

So come on peeps , find me a pump that can empty my tank in seconds using 1 amp per hour  ;D ;D ;D

Vyair once advertised that their 5lpm Chinese whatever drew 3 amps.  But looking at the specs from another source indicated that this was an unrestricted flow and that under our working conditions they drew slightly more than a Shurflo pump.

I get where you are coming from. Reducing current draw from the battery will mean less current for the solar panels to replenish. I was working on the same idea with my SCR.

I was actually surprised that both Shurflo pumps drew the same current to be honest. In the old motortrade days I had a Citroen Picasso 2.0 hdi. The Picasso had a fuel consumption readout. At 50 mph tickling the accelerator you used less fuel in 4th gear than on the same road conditions in 5th gear. The engine was turning over faster in 4th but the extra effort in 5th meant additional fuel was used.
I thought the same principal would apply with the shallower cam pump. The motor was spinning faster but was having to do less work, but the ampmeter guage disagreed with my theory.

The lower current 3 amp draw pumps on backpacks aren't 'man' enough to push water down a 100m length of hose.

Could reducing flow and going to 100 degree fan jets help with reducing daily power demand?

Hey i should be out shopping for Touran alternators not pumps really !
On way back from MOT the bat light came on , when home i put the multimeter on the bat and was only getting 12 volt , should have been 14.5 me thinks .
I then went straight off alt while running 12.5 v , stuck all the electrics on and got 11.5 v  , goosed or goosed ?

I have the same lump in my Golf but the alt is 30 amp weaker , looks like about £200 lighter wallet today then !

I have the answer and the running cost is very cheap!
Hamsters or Guinea pigs!!
retro fit a dynamo to a wheel and keep a small cage in back of van. Every now n then when wattage drops, throw some greens in cage!

If you want a faster flow you have to use gerbils

If you want a higher flow without turning the pump controller up high increase the size of pole hose, pencil jets and tank hose.

I use 65 on the controller for a large extreme brush with 4-6 pencil jets
 or
65-68 on a constructor brush with 34 jets (30  on a rinse bar and 4  on two end caps) and that is plenty of water to rinse brush on with a sheet curtain of water running over the top and sides of the brush as I come down the windows so  no more worrying about slow rinsing on hydrophobic glass.

Its not that i want a higher flow , im fine in that area , at 85 i get 1.7 L , at 99 it must be 1.8 or1.9  L or so , what im after is a lower rated amp pump , and as mine is 10+ years old it seems the ideal time to search one out .
Its just that i kept seeing a lot of others running at 50 or so and getting the same flow i get or more , this is why i thought my pump might be soon to give up , the goal is to get as lower amp one that i can to aid with my solar setup .
