Im a Southern Softie !!
« on: October 04, 2017, 09:38:42 pm »
Its that time of year again , had a bit of a mare this past week , is it just me or are the snails and slugs out with a vengeance already , not really had a problem in the past but every job lately is totally plastered in the trails , and my Extreme stiff is just not cutting the mustard .
Also i am suffering with my Gardiner green , not laying as flat as usual , i use it as main hose , but i think that there must be a point when it says " No I aint doin it " like it has all summer with regards to temps .
So upon my return home tonight i  buckled and put on my fleecey skirt and refitted the hot system again   ;D
What a joy it was , the hose laid flat as a pancake and took the heat very well with regard to Univalve , in the morning i will be laughing in the face of all slugs and snails , bring it on you slimey feckers  ;D ;D ;D
I'm so lazy I'm getting tired of it !

I see snail trails all over the place as well up in our neck of the woods. But its the spiders that have been very active this summer.

Its not that its unheard of , but this week i have had quite a few that are so bad that the windows look frosted , and as you can imagine , when its like that the scrubbing needed takes forever , more so with an extreme , but im so used to the light weight that even putting on the SL or Ultimate feels like im using a GF Universal topped off with a Vikan  :o

Thats why, when i went hot theres no turning back!  Theres only been a couple of days when ive forgot to heat the water up and instantly regretted not doing so.
Dragging a stiff hose about and thats both the microbore and the pole hose is a pain in the rear end!!
This is why i dont understand daz who claims hot is of no benefit. Slug trails and spider poo easily comes off all year round and the stubborn bird poo as well.

I quite like the immersion method that you use.
I've always used cold, but that's mainly down to my circumstances of being in a flat and I never wanted a gas heater in the back of my pickup. I'm moving soon though and will be re instating my 4040 ro and a static tank in the garage. I don't want to go drilling holes in the vans custom tank as its a proper baffled one and not possible. Will fitting an immersion in the static tank and transferring it to the van of a morning be just as effective ? .... only downside I see is I'll really need to use a whole tank load of water each day or at least fill up with what I expect to use.  :-\

If you have water left in your van tank overnight itll cool the water down you put in the next morning.

Also it depends on your storage tank.

For me, once ive heated up the water in my 500ltr tank high enough (70 degrees) it stays hot for the huge majority of the day. Also depending how much water i use, i can have a starting temp being in the 40's once ive topped it back up. Which means less time cor the immersion being on to get the tank back upto 70.
Whereas if your heating a 1000ltr ibc tank,  obviously you would need to insulate it and run the immersion for longer perhaps??
That does sound like a huge cost!

Or insulate the van tank. Transfer the water from ibc via a gas heater and fill up the van tank with hot water at the beginning of the day. Obviously allow for the extra fill time.  This might be a better option perhaps??

Yep, that's what I meant by downside .

I'll probably be using a 600 L static tank as I already have one ( van is 500 ). How long do you leave your heater on for to get to that temp ?

I find the extreme brush with natural bristles has great scrubbing power and will get rid of the odd snail trail with ease.

Plus one

although I use an additive  NOT vision ( whoops a little controversial) to the water.

But yes spider and  slug trails are real pain now, hot water definatly helps. But after years of hot water eating through the extreme brushes I opted for a different option to dealing with them.

No need , the stiff extreme was an absolutely different brush today , it was taking the trails right off with 2 passes , down to the hot of course , but i am already asking myself why i take the heater out each year and make it harder for myself , i guess my thinking is why pay out on gas all the time , but after today i really think its worth the cost to have nice hoses and hot which does clean far better and faster to boot , and it does , no question !
I worked from 11 to 4 today on my usual domestic stuff and i was amazed to see that i only used 1kg of gas , so that said i could get 13 days from my usual size bottle , im going to knock it back and say 10 days a bottle , thats £3 a day , a small price to pay for the comfort and ease of hot , maybe i will start taking my own lunch and not spending £3 on a Tesco meal deal , that will be the hot paid for .

What do you mean by the hot eating the extremes , i guess you use the medium mix ?
If so try the stiff for hot , once warmed up it turns into the medium mix , stiff is all i  buy nowadays hot or cold as i dont have a lot of lead or georgian on the books , and once cooled it springs right back into shape , unlike the medium  ;)
