Takes a licking n still keeps ticking

Opened back of van to start on next job and was greeted with an horrendous smell. Couldnt initially work out why or if it was in the air or not!!  Then i saw my 24v motor for the hose reel smoking!!

Once my hose is all back in the van i trap it in the van doors ready for next job. But this time something fell onto my ON switch and obviously the reel couldnt spin and so it was burning the motor out. Realised this when i spotted smoke coming from the motor!!

Glad to say now that it has cooled down etc it still works!!!    Or that would have snooked my already wet working day today!

My wiring burns out if I have the reel on but don't let it spin  :D need some thicker gauge wire I reckon

well no, because it would keep blowing it,  and if it didnt blow it the wiring would burn out.

Thicker wire needed

Mine just stops dead. Doesn't effect it. Your not running it on 24volts are you

I thought the whole point of having a fuse rated lower than the wiring was so it would blow before your wire melts?

No , that cant be right , i would much rather rewire the van than pop in a new 50p fuse  ;D ;D ;D

Yes you need a fuse lower than the wiring so it blows first

But if the wire you are using is so thin to begin with that it burns out as soon as it is under  load then you need to replace it with the correct gauge wire first then add a fuse incase you do as Nathan did.

No point putting a fuse in with the current wiring  otherwise it would  blow everytime I stopped the reel with my hand which would be many times a day

Because I used what I had lying about.

Now I've realised my mistake I will get the correct wire
