What to do?

I need to choose between a merlin ro and a 300gpd system.
I am working on my own at present but will be taking on some one in the near future. So I hope the 300 gpd is up to it.
I have heard the rejection rate on the merlin is not good but will produce the water very quickly. Do the merlin membranes cost much? do I have to put a set of pre filters before it? Do you have to buy a flush kit seperately? are the filters expensive?

It seems that the merlin does the job quickly but is it worth the hassle? which would you choose?

sounds like Ive already made my decision, but do you have any information that would change my mind?

Hi Lee. Ive had my ro man 300 set up from Gardeners for a month now. Spot on mate. Kirsty is great, helpfull etc. Ive 300gpd, not pumped. My tds at the tap is 258, 650ltr holding tank goes in at 6 tds, tap presure about 80psi fills up from empty in less than19hrs.

MERLIN!!!!  its a no brainer.  rejection rate is fine as long as you use a di vessel after.

how low the tds is after filtering or how much waste water goes to the drain?
does anyone know if the merlin produces more waste water than other systems?

Rejection rate is the amount of waste water that goes down the drain, the melin has a high rejection rate compared to the amount of pure water that it produces.

i also have pumped 300gpd ro-man and i think it is 1:1. Fills 220 litre water butt in 4 hours.
What is the merlin? 7:1 or something??
At that ratio for every pound of water you buy you would flush 86 pence straight down the drain again.

A lot of nonsense - the rejection rate of the merlin is about 3:1, anyway, how much does 1000ltrs tap water cost you?  Is it really a big concern, plus the RO-man units are so slow, very good but slow (i've had 2 so I know what I'm saying here plus an AquaFX ro), you can reduce the rejection rate of the merlin if you are so worried about spending an extra £1 a week on water.  Tap TDS 350, out of merlin at 3/4, 1.2ltrs/min @45psi

hiya macc, mine goes in between 480ppm and for 2 weeks now 540 ppm. Comes out between 7 and 9.

3:1 isn't that bad. I didn't know this.
Your point about the extra cost of water is true. I'm beginning to view water as very cheap for what i can earn from it wfp. I earn about £220 (from 500litres pure water) from £1 (1000 litres) of water from anglian water or whoever it is around here.
Also the merlin spec you've mentioned looks superior (apart from waste) to my 300gpd ro-man.

Hi Mark, please bear in mind that some may find their merlin producing water at 10ppm it depends on the water going in etc, you really do need a di vessel after the merlin, a smallone will do,If you don't mind having to wait 3 or 4 days for 1000ltrs pure water then ro-man is ok, however if you're like me you'll want something a bit more productive.  Nothing worse than running out of water.

I could use these for the vans out on the road. Would be handy to have a quick refill as an when we needed it?

We do it for £279 + VAT, I don't think that we are the cheapest though, but we do pre-assemble and test them though.

Can't go wrong for that price, worth getting one as a back up to sit in the van, would give you 100 ltrs of usable water in around an hour.

As much as I rate the merlin I wouldn't recommend one for emergency water unless you are going to be parked in one spot for a couple of hours, if anyone is serious about emergency water then a 4040 RO/DI or straight DI would be better.

My merlin must have a 3 to 1 waste ratio, happy with results though 295 in, 10 out.
