My sjcam has died after only being used 4 times 
Didn't rate it anyway, battery life was terrible, sometimes dead within 20 minutes using WiFi.

What's the battery like on go pro's ?
Heard the WiFi isn't great on go pro's over a certain height though.

Are there any other alternatives?

I can't fault sky vacs camera and monitor, some will not like the price , however iv had it over 2 years and not had any problems with the wifi on 3 storey properties.
I'm a big believer in - you get what you pay for .

Be prepared buy a couple of go pro batteries and have a charger in the van , , , , , simples,   The wifi is good dont know where you got that information.

It lasts for ages , iv never had a battery die on me , it is only basic but it's got night vision , the picture is great,  can't record on the one iv got although I think slacky may have got one which can record from sky vac . Iv never needed the facility tbh

Cheers shrek will take a look at that camara.
Like you im not too fussed about recording, as long as i can see what I'm doing I'm happy.

I have got a black go pro and also a skycam  .
The go pro is ok but at height wifi can be a problem.
The skycam is the best overall in my opinion.
