Roof clean
« on: March 28, 2017, 05:20:34 pm »
Hi,
This could be my first roof clean it's a bungalow which would be good to start with it got normal clay tiles with a fair bit of moss on my plan was to scrape down the moss and gutter vac out of gutters as we go there's an old house One with the moss on and a separate building (annex) which is only a year old but tiles are going green to but no moss to scrape the next problem is there's clean, new decking around both buildings , which chemicals would you use? And would it look like new once applied?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Jamie

I would do the job naked !     That way your feet have more traction for not slipping off the tiles,   you may get a little splashback but you can buy a balls protector like thay use in cricket to protect your johnson.    Any further advicE you need will be happy to help.

That reminds me of the time I went onto a ground floor pitched tiled roof and could not get back down onto the ladder due to lack of grip. In the end I had to take my boots and socks off.

On a serious note going by bookfarce pages one chap died recently whilst doing a roof cleaning job.

Or you could wear same socks for a couple of weeks till they are sticky, and that would give extra grip !

From what I have seen and firms being fined heavily in court too there are still  to many cowboys cleaning roofs without using proper safety gear. Just imagine how a custard would feel if someone fell and died or ended up a cabbage just trying to save a few quid by a numpty that had total disregard for his or his workers safety.

That's the problem with roof cleaning as from what I've seen more often than not needs work doing to them. Also need to be experienced and prepared to replace any cracked/broken tiles, blown mortar etc without killing yourself in the process especially if you cause the damage.

Don't sound so appealing now does it. lol

If you are going to spend a day scraping the roof , you would be better off pressure washing the roof
Removing the moss and giving an instant clean in preparation for a softwash solution

Hi ed i was worried it would blast the tiles out they are old clay tiles so would clean up well I've tried it on concrete tiles and it takes the colour of them, how wide you apply algoclear ? Im thinking of getting some fan jets and putting in an old Gardiner head and using  my clx27 pole and Gardiner back pack sprayer  would this be ok?

To actually answer your question mate Benz Biocide will help clean it over time and certainly prevent regrowth for 12 months or so...https://www.benzsoftwash.com/products/benz-biocidal-wash
For an immediate effect try Blackwash or make up your own hypo mix.
Just make sure any chemicals are suitably diluted and to be on safe side prewet decking, cover with decent tarpaulin and if needs be soak again after treatment - like u would plants if u want to be extra careful.
