Hi all, ive been putting my pennies away for a Nissan Navara and a WFP set up. Im shopping around looking for one, but i have a few concerns about security.
I dont have a driveway so my navara will be parked on the street outside my house. Will it be secure enough to have a system in the back ?
Ranger as in a FORD ranger? like this one? >>>> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2005-Ford-Ranger-2-5-Diesel-1-owner-Pickup-4x4-4dr-Only-77-000-miles-/262906108678?hash=item3d366cdb06:g:N7AAAOSwhQhY0sA1
Best advice is to buy something else instead. I'm a Ranger fan but almost all the trucks available have a better reputation for reliability, build and dealer intelligence. The Izuzu Denver & DMax seem to be very good along with the Mazda B and Hilux. New Mercedes pick up is a Navara too and anticipation for greatness is already very low.
That's the same Ranger model and cab option as mine. I'm at nearly 160,000 miles and five years ownership and all is good. The Mk2 pictured is a solid, reliable and hugely capable old beastie but fairly low tech with short gearing and an old IDI Diesel. Think 25 ish MPG and you won't go far wrong. The Mk3 Ranger from 06-09 is improved in many areas with more power, bhp and a slighly deeper load bed. They use a common rail diesel engine which is a big improvement over the older unit but not quite as reliable. The major issue with the Mk3 is the reliability of the transmission. It's partly due to having more power, really daft gearing and a dual mass flywheel. Gearboxes also tend to go bang and / or fall out of 5th gear which can be costly but once sorted should be ok. The Mk4 from 09-12 uses a revised transmission setup that pretty much eliminates all the issues. Then from 12 onward the Ranger stops being a re-badged Mazda and then becomes an actual Ford - some are fine but many issues have been reported including engines killed due to a faulty oil pump.
The Navara issues go back to the old D22 shape when engines spontaneously expired around the 40,000 mile mark with no3 conrod going through the side of the block and a new engine being required. This persisted into the D40 shape of 04 onward along with many, many other issues. The problem seems to be that when Nissan and Renault built the thing there was very little money available and they cut corners everywhere. Check youtube for a rather good specialist talking about what goes wrong with them. The mechanical setup seems to be poorly designed and built from very poor metal with very poor castings. Many things break. This was the reputation for the last decade and last year came a new one: the chassis of many had snapped in half. As with the engine issues Nissan initially tried every devious trick to wriggle out of paying up blaming the problem on air, water, fairies etc. A Facebook page was setup last year by a disgruntled Navara owner who decided to take Nissan on. In a very short space of time the Nissan Navara Snapped Chassis Group had over 10,000 members who were equally disgruntled and eventually this forced Nissan to buy back many of the Navara's or provide hefty discounts against new ones - though why anyone would want another is beyond most people.
