Ideas needed please
« on: March 17, 2017, 04:25:29 pm »
I have a customer enquiry to clear the moss from the roof and then clear out the gutters,  what is the best method for working safely above the conservatory which spans the back of the house?

Any ideas welcomed, Thanks

There are some jobs you can do and some jobs you can't do.

This is one I would walk away from as the safest way is via scaffolding above the conservatory roof. Roofers will probably run lengths of board across the conservatory roof and work from that off a step ladder, but I certainly won't do that. (They did it when putting up new gutters on a customer's roof with a similar conservatory extension. I think they also put support beams and support stands inside to take the weight.)

this is precisely why i refuse to clean flatish conny roofs like that.they are a pain.

you can pole it  off a ladder but its awkward and hard work.price well if your going to take it on.
price higher/work harder!

Gutter vac. I'd probably work off a ladder at the front of the conservatory and side to save my shoulders a bit.

they also look like pine needles in the guttering so even with a vac its gonna be very hard work. I would simply say this to them if you want me to do it it needs scaffolding get them to sort that side of things out and it will be a lot easier job.  Or as like spruce said with 2 of you use a roofing ladder and just move it along with access from the front (so 2 roofing ladders needed).
There is no easy way to do it.

I don't do tile roof cleaning but there are 4 option you could consider.
1. Picker large enough to reach over to the back of the house roof
2. Full scaffolding erected including fall protection on the sides.
3. Access via Cat ladders etc with the use of fall arrest ropes anchored front and back.
4. Say no and pass it on to someone else.

Anyway going by the look of the house they are not going to want to pay for your safety  when some numpty will do it for next to bugger all. Myself I would choose option 4

Do you advertise this service ? ie: roof cleaning and gutter cleaning ? If no then why consider taking it on ?
The very fact that you've posted such a question on here suggests to me that you should pass on it. Sorry if that sounds blunt and unhelpful..........................

...................Now I will go on to say I was asked a few years back to do a very similar job for somebody. I'd get shot down on here for endorsing it and suggesting you do the same as me . I'll just say it involved a ladder, some rope and a yard broom  ;)
Although all went well and did a good job - I'd not do it again. There are specialist companies out there with the tools and chems ( if needed ) for the job and the specific insurance.( as well as other numpties like my previous self keen to do it for next to bugger all hey Smurf:D ;D :) )
