Adding oven Cleaning to my business.
« on: February 21, 2017, 08:14:02 pm »
Hi all I'm thinking of adding Oven Cleaning to my business  as I get alot of requests for this service but we don't cover that area at the moment. I would like to add this to my services were is best to get training for this or even better is there any company's that would be willing to let me go with them and get training that way . Thanks in advance Paul.

Are you busy enough with carpets?

Ovens are a hard slog and you don't make the same hourly rate as carpets and upholstery.

For a full oven cleaning service, I've heard it can take as long as 2 - 3 hours. And the fee is round £50 - £70.

If I was adding another service I would go for something that makes the same or more as carpet cleaning. For example, leather cleaning and repair, natural stone floor cleaning and sealing, carpet repair, pressure washing of drives etc, applying insecticide treatments, wood floor sanding and treating etc
All the above services have bigger hourly charges than carpet cleaning. Something to think about.

Paul like you I was always being asked but all I can do is echo the above post. Hard filthy work with little reward imo.
The guys who just do ovens and are totally set up properly to do them have it down to a fine art.
If your busy with carpets thenot my advices would be to specialise in soft furnishings and if your looking to add a service then why not curtains?
Hope this helps Andy

If your busy with carpets how will you have the time to clean ovens ;)

I get asked about window cleaning quite often but turn it down it does not offer the hourly rate I want it would be the same with ovens. I worked in a house that was due to get moved into by new owners, so they were having the carpets cleaned and the oven, a woman and her son took the same time to clean the oven as I took to clean the carpets she was paid £75 I was paid  £190.

I can see the attraction of doing both jobs while you are at the house as its only one journey so it's a easy add on but I would still rather move onto another carpet cleaning job

I bought the window cleaning round right outside my front door and set myself up with WFP and best thing I ever did.
I find I can get 3 days carpet cleaning work per week with minimal spend on advertising and do 2 days window cleaning.
It doesn't work exactly like that sometimes it could be 2 days cc and 3 days wfp or 4 and 1 but on average I now do 3 day week cc and 2 day week wfp.
The window cleaning works out around £25/£30 per hour but after the initial lay out for equipment I have almost zero outgoings for the window cleaning side.....apart from a small round 4 miles away my furthest property is around 5 minute walk away on my main round.......when I did it traditional I never bothered with the van.
It's nice to be outdoors in the Summer for a change plus any sudden cc cancellations you can just jump onto the window cleaning.
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

With ovens there is a lot to go wrong too..

I started off by cleaning and repairing ovens with my dad.. He's a catering Equipment repairs and service geezer.. In theory great, but when you come to a worn door, that just doesn't want to come off, or an oven that's seen better days, you get the brunt..
MY oven is caked on, no amount of cleaning is ever going to get that clean and spotless, however we're happy as we know its "clean for use"... I have been trained on the job over many teenage years how to do it, but it is graft.. really is (skinned knuckles galore)

I looked and some companies change about 1500 for training, which includes fitting a soak sink in the back of your van.. that renders half your van unusable for a business that will make you less money..

There is a guy on Facebook, (yes i know).. that's offering a single oven and white goods clean for 35 quid.. That's a bargain price, I nearly rang him when i moved house! Now if that oven does take an hour and half, inc travelling etc, he's looking at 20 quid for an hour.. Much less than CC'ing..

However I'm a stingy bugger and for the £65 he would quote for my 2 door range.. I'd rather do it myself..

And if the door glass shatters for any inexplicable reason that's your £50 down the drain.
I must agree with most of the posters here, nasty filthy work with little reward. Chems are horrible, takes between 1.5 and 3 hours and there are loads of guys and gels out there doing it for £30 or less. Costs for boiling tank, gas, chems, scrapers aprons, goggles, gloves, mats, cloths, ppe, training, steam cleaner, petrol, van running costs etc. Just don't justify the returns if you want to a great job.
Then there's the annoying ticking of the hob igniter if you get to much liquid on it that can go on for days. Most of the ovens haven't seen any attempt at cleaning for a couple of years and their dog always want to eat the scrapings.
