Alternator question
« on: February 02, 2017, 08:07:08 pm »
Looking to get a new van (transit custom) it comes with a standard 150a alternator with the option to upgrade to a heavy duty 240a one.  I would like to still use a split charge relay system and with the issues that the newer vans have regarding split charging etc the leisure battery  would upgrading to the more heavy duty one be of any benefit or is it not necessary ?

any input would be great
thanks

I would definitely change it,if your having charging problems it's one of the first things a good auto electrician will advise you to do.

Are you getting an inverter fitted?
Dual batteries?
The upgraded alternator is only really needed if you are powering things on the van battery/ies

The upgrade will make no difference what so ever if you are going to get a battery to battery charger (a conventional intelligent relay wont work on most modern vans with regen braking) as it doesn't draw from the alternator
Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

Thanks for that mate, not getting an inverted fitted or anything .  Not sure how i'm going to split charge the leisure battery yet probably use something similar system that  grippatank sell now for modern vans.
