Pricing in West Yorkshire
« on: January 17, 2017, 01:03:49 pm »
As a window cleaner in West Yorkshire how do the rest of you guys price a job up in West Yorkshire ?
Do you price by the time on the job or the amount of windows / or the style of property?

Sorry this is slightly irrelevant, as im south yorkshire, but.....
A while ago, i lost a customer down to them moving. Eventually someone moved into the property which was bought and rented out. It was one of many that i do on this particular street. As i was cleaning the neighbours windows, the chap came out asking for a price. His origin is that of bartering for a price. I told him its £10, like most on his street. He tried knocking this price down saying he only worked part time himself and his wife was a stay at home mum with 2 small kids. I laughed, and told him i have worked this street for many years and ive not seen anyone else only work part time to have a merc and bmw parked on their drive and your quibbling a tenner.  I should put the price even higher as i work full time and cant afford a merc for my stay at home wife.

He ended up doing a midnight fly off, 2 months in arrears with rent and plenty of improvements needed on property before it was rented out again

Same as anywhere else in the UK. You will get the odd windy who charges a £5, doesn't mean you have to.
I to 2 old lass next door to each other. Both balled off with there traditional windy. I got them both at a £10 each.
When I got to know them, I asked how much he charged....£4. LMFA not me£6 to £8 front only. Semis £9 to £20. Depends how big, how hard access is etc

Thanks guys , I know it depends on lots of factors. Just curious what other cleaners charge . Last year I decided that all house started at £10 plus old people flats at £5 . I know it's not a lot of money but was amaze when I had a walk up and after I gave a quote  they said I was twice as much as there  window cleaner . Keep him I advise them at that price . As I will not do the job at that price.

There are plenty of what I call "old school" trad cleaners about that just clean glass. Hence why the charge a lot less and have not put their prices up in years. Some even still do 2 weekly cleans too.

Some folk live in the past or have these type of cleaners so they are price conditioned which don't help.  Once you start trying to compete on price alone then could end up running around like a headless chicken. Far better to try not compete with what I call t "bottom feeders" instead concentrate on building a well paid round for less work and more reward.

Based in wakefield.

I've struggled building a round due to the low prices. Next doors windy charges 4.50 and there's plenty of guys doing semis from 5-10 pound.

When I started in was 8-10 for a semi and struggled to get work even at that. Now Im more like 12-14 for a semi. I don't have any massive jobs because there isn't many massive houses round here. I have only a handful over 20 quid. The cheapest I will go now is 8 quid on 2 bed terraced and tbh that's rare now as I aim for minimum any house a tenner and fronts at 6-8 quid.

In answer to the original question on how I price well I just kind of look at it and say a price, I don't really count windows or think this is a 20 min job. I suppose I just price it base on a similar job a I have but it seems to work out at about 30 p.h over the entire round

I got shot of my regular low rate domestic window cleaning custards a long time ago and now concentrate on better paid work.
Running around like a headless chicken was not for me.

Im also glad that im in a cushy position of having a well established round, that way im not dependant on any low priced jobs or messers or anything so i can easily drop customers if they become troublesome for me.
Yet saying that, i never allowed competitors to dictate my prices either. So stick to your guns, it will eventually if not already, pay off.
A friend asked their windie why he hasnt put the price up in years. His response was that he would lose the work. He was scared to put the price up. My friend was happy with his work.......so point being, be proud of a good job you do, keep it professional and price jobs respectively
