I believe the pm feature was removed due to abuse.

We can easily turn on the PM feature....this is something we used to utilise, however this was abused by members sending each other abusive messages as well as suppliers using  it as a sneaky way to contact members. We found it much easier to allow members to post whatever they like in the main boards.

May I ask your reasons for wanting the PM feature? It's interesting to hear all different sides.

Thanks.

I suppose you can't stop suppliers doing that so I understand from a financial point of view if you are looking at lost advertising revenue.

With regards to members posting abuse can this not be dealt with on a personal basis just as it would be if someone posted abuse on the open forum.  So if someone recieves an abusive message they can report it.

I think it's very useful to be able to interact with another user on a personal level for a few reasons.

Items for sale/ jobs for tender - to be able to discuss without having to post your number or email on a forum.

Stops the F.A.O dazmond threads, If someone has a some question for amother member does it need a thread?

Exchanging personal details etc, contact info.

Discussions on a sensitive subject, maybe you want to discuss a company etc without plastering there me all over.

General chat with a member, maybe you want a conversation with someone you are friendly with about how business is going etc, again does this need to be done on an open forum?

Personally think it makes the forum much more interactive and would be much better off with the function.

Maybe you could ask forum members what they think? Surely if everyone wants it it would be a good idea re introduce it?

Hi Adam,

Great post and thanks for all the info.....it's certainly a great argument for PM's. I can assure you from a financial point of view loss in revenue wasn't our issue, it was purely because members were getting spammed by suppliers and others leading the members away from the forum. Also you're quite right members can report abuse of PM's, it just seems if some people know they're not getting read publicly on the open forum they abuse this tool again leading the member away before we even get chance to intervene.

ps. Just so you know "Private Messages" are exactly that.....Private, meaning we can't even look into them so it gets very messy when members are reporting them. How do we take sides without the full picture? How do we know what to believe? Opening up PM's opens up a lot of tricky administration work.

It would be interesting to hear others views on this.......

Our worry is new members coming on board just to use the PM feature, leaving it open to abuse to advertise to members and send what they like without us knowing or being able to moderate.

A potential idea would be if we only allowed CIU Gods the PM facility with over 250 posts so they're active contributors to the forum rather than newbies/none contributors who statistically are more open to abuse the system would work?
