An issue I had with petal type reel was driving me mad. The cog kept having too much side to side play and the chain jumping off all day. I tried all sorts to fix it. Eventually I realised when you strip the reel down that both side of it push together into a plastic central piece. What happens in use is it starts to come apart throwing the cog of centre. I don't think the petal reels are the best choice for this conversion for that reason. I'm going to try to tape mine together at the weekend otherwise I'll buy a different type of reel maybe a man's parts one.

I had to trim the red spacers that came with the newish pure freedom reel. I still have a little side to side play, but the screws ive used are a little long on purpose  and act like a buffer to stop movement too much. Been using it all week with no problems and like a big kid, smiling at the ease of work now.

Can you buy some spacers to fit it instead of cost of a new reel?

I have the same reel, its almost 10 years old, but have not experienced that issue. I wonder if you have the plastic Bushes in correct. The thick part of the bushes should be on the inside

Same here, I've just ordered all the bits. I've gone for a winch remote as I think it will have a stop/start function ( as in depress to wind in and release to stop ). These are the bits I've ordered. My van has a 12v auxillary in the back so gonna connect to this via a cigarette lighter ( just got to find out if its a constant live feed, rather than having ignition on. Will let you know how I get on. The only thing quizzing me at the moment is how you got the cog directly centred on the reel to stop it going out of concentric.

I might be lucky as the cog I've ordered has 3 pre drilled holes in a triangular template, same as reel, but I very much doubt they will line up...lol, That would be asking too much

nice little project   About £48.00 in total, and went for the gold " bling " chain cos I live in Essex    pmsl


Also dumping this 100m of 15mm thermobore as its a bloody pain in the arse, too much stress on the reel and a nightmare to reel in and out. We use cold water anyway and thought the thermobore would be good for anti kink.... but its not !!

fieldsy how did you get on with all the bits and how's the remote working for you .also any chance of letting me know how to wire the remote to the battery and motor because I ain't got a clue

Just a few queries before I order.
I have just been looking at petrolscooter store on eBay and getting confused with the specs.

• Sprocket - How many teeth should it have?
• Motor - How many Watts? 250?  And differences between MY and ZY etc
• Chain - How many links/rivets?

Really looking forward to getting started making this.

I dont use a remote, its just a simple on off switch from asda of all places. Cost just less than £5 and easy to wire up. I like to keep things simple

Im enjoying how easy it is. Even though huge majority of my work is compact, i still have the odd ones that i have to unload to do, which is a foot in the doorway of areas i want to expand into. But it takes me longer to unload and reload van than it xoes to clean some of these jobs, so a bit of a pain really. But now its soo easy.
I think big difference will be when summer really kicks in and instead of wasting energy winding hose in, this will make a big difference.
The switch is easy and on plenty of wire so i can hold switch in one hand and guide hose in other.
Chains come off a couple of times but thats down to my diy skills. Basically i need to replace some screws with flat head screws instead of my current oval head ones. If that makes sense. But overall, im really pleased with it and the relative ease of construction.

anyone who's having issues with the petal reels spreading, just put some self tapping screws through the plastic hub into the metal sides. problem solved, Mine started spreading before I built my electric one, its a common issue I believe. another method I've seen is to put a threaded bar through the centre and put a washer and bolt on each end.

Fixed the chain coming off by adding a small spacer so the chain links are not hitting the bolts holding the main reel in place and it works a treat.
Same as going onto wfp and hot water...."should have done this ages ago"

Fieldsy what I want to know is how do you wire the winch remote to the motor, there is a red n black and yellow and white I think the instructions don't make sense to me and also did you use a relay and what size fuse did you use sorry for all questions but all you help n info would be much appreciated cheers kev

I used a 30amp relay with built in fuse. The wiring is pretty straight forward. The white wire on the winch doesn't get used. I'll hook out my diagram for connections and post it up

I got a small  switch from Maplins for mine.  When you press it, reels in, if you release, it stops. I did this for safety. Cuts the power straight away. I've also rigged it up at shoulder height and out of the way of the reel. So no leaning  over . I have a tag in my right hand, cleans the hose as I'm reeling in and my left-hand on the switch.............easy
