Just about to order the bits and I've seen a 12v 100 watt motor.

Wonder how that would compare?

I would stick with 24v on a 12 v battery. Motor will last longer as it's on half power

Same here, I've just ordered all the bits. I've gone for a winch remote as I think it will have a stop/start function ( as in depress to wind in and release to stop ). These are the bits I've ordered. My van has a 12v auxillary in the back so gonna connect to this via a cigarette lighter ( just got to find out if its a constant live feed, rather than having ignition on. Will let you know how I get on. The only thing quizzing me at the moment is how you got the cog directly centred on the reel to stop it going out of concentric.

I might be lucky as the cog I've ordered has 3 pre drilled holes in a triangular template, same as reel, but I very much doubt they will line up...lol, That would be asking too much  ;)

nice little project :)  About £48.00 in total, and went for the gold " bling " chain cos I live in Essex  ;) ;D  pmsl

Also dumping this 100m of 15mm thermobore as its a bloody pain in the arse, too much stress on the reel and a nightmare to reel in and out. We use cold water anyway and thought the thermobore would be good for anti kink.... but its not !!

I just offered up the cog to reel and used a centre punch to mark where I wanted the 4 new holes. It works perfectly and I saved 400£

you must have hit dead centre by chance ?, as if it was out slightly wouldn't it take an oval ( like a cam ) line rather than a circular....or am I reading too much into it ?....lol.

I would be very careful going down this route.

The plate (sticker) on the motor says that the motor draws 14 amps. Cigarette lighter plugs aren't rated for this amperage, usually 10 amps. Hopefully it will be protected with a fuse. Some auxiliary power points may be protected by a 15 amp  fuse.

If you look at the setup made by Jason King which this is a copy of, he uses heavy duty cable with connections directly to a purpose battery.  You don't want the joy of making a cheaper diy unit replaced with the cost of rectifying a burnt out wiring harness/burnt out van.
Please don't think this is a little OTT. Many Vauxhall Corsa and Zifira's owners have had their cars go up in smoke due to a fault on the air blower motor - that takes much less current than this motor.

I used heavy duty wire and also have an inline fuse

Probably so but I doubt a very slightly off centre cog would throw it out enough to as there will likely be some natural flex in the chain.

You could use an oval cog if you had a detailer type system to take the chain tension if required. But yes too much thinking just put the cog central

I don't think your going OTT at all m8, thanks for the input. My combo is a ex british gas van. The 12v socket is an auxillary extra to the standard lighter socket. The ex gas vans seem to be very well modified with extra specs, and I'm assuming they would cover all eventualities in anything they added to the van, so hopefully a fuse is in place. This particular socket has a length of wire and conduit around it, so I can easily add another fuse if there is not one in the system. Thanks for the advice. What inline fuse ampage would you use ?.

What I actually didn't explain was that I would use a cigarette lighter type plug in the 12v socket and wire this to winch receiver.

cheers fieldsy

Little bit of jigging here and there, but wasnt too hard to figure it out. Got it to £30.50 for bits, im just deciding on the on the switch, i like the idea of a remote one but just something else to go wrong in my opinion.  Pic and little vid below. PS thats not me getting excited on video  ;D

Yes I already have my wire thru from battery for the pump, so will splice off that.

thanks LWC, If I can't use the socket, I'll go with direct to battery. Its just that this socket is in such a convenient position to use  ;)

@ Spruce

Just been reading up on the combo fuse rating on the 12v socket and its rated at 20amps, so would I be good to go using the socket ??

Be fine, for amount of time your using reel, 30 - 40 secs ish to reel in 100m...and who reels in 100m every day? Youll be using it for seconds at a time. Plus the fact youll be by the van when reeling in...whats worst that can happen?

It should be fine if the motor draws a max of 14 amps.

I see the remote controller for the winch is connected up to the solenoid switch already on the winch. Its this solenoid that takes the current for the winch, not the remote.

This is why another post by @Mufcglen mentioned using the remote with 20 amp relays.
