Just try taking plasterboard down to the local "recycling centre" and you will be treated as if you are trying to dispose of radioactive waste. 
I was interrogated by the site manager as to whether I was in the building trade because I drive a van, then asked to produce my waste carriers licence to which I told him in no uncertain terms to ferk off!
And was hit with an £18 charge because plasterboard goes to landfill.

In county Durham no vans are allowed to tip without a permit you can only get three at a time of the council and have to state exactly what you are tipping it's been like this for years

They been doing that up our way for years. Its doesn't matter if you van is signwritten or not. We only get 6 visits per year.

It was free to start off with but here's the latest;

Permit Information


There is a £45.60 charge per permit issued. This will entitle the permit holder to 6 tips within a year.
Permits will only be issued on production of the vehicles registration document (V5), latest utility bill and a current driving licence.
Permits are limited to one per household. Residents with two or more vehicles will have to denote which vehicle they require the permit for.

Yep, its been same here for i dont know how long. Only effected me since last yr when i got the van. However, the idiot council workers either at the office or dump site have messed up. On our permit, you have to designate which dump site you are going to, which i did. Also a description of my van, size and colour etc and the nature of my work.  So several months pass before i need a skip run of household rubbish and the staff at the designated site would not open the gates to allow me to pass (as roof rack would have hit), stating i had to travel another 20 miles to another site. (Fiat scudo van) after an arguement with them, i circled block and went back and simply opened the gate myself rather than waiting for em to let me in or not!

Our local authority has introduced a registration scheme for both cars and vans with limited amount of visits per year.
Bulky waste collection was free.
Now
Cost:
•£5 per item up to a maximum of four items per collection
•£20 for white goods (such as a fridge, freezer, cooker, etc) – maximum of one item per order
We are unable to collect:
•Asbestos
•Plaster board
There is now fly tipping taking place on a scale I have never seen before.
Surely it must cost more now to go round with a cleansing lorry and a team to pick up all the fly tipped rubbish.

These "recycling centres" have fabulous conversion rates with our local one converting nearly 80% of stuff into new stuff.
While our local tip has moved to quiet green lanes. Progress.

i have the high roof version plus roof rack and ladders.no chance of getting under!

I went in my car today with garden waste and two pieces of stone. I was asked if I had a permit to dump the stone. (About the weight of four house bricks) I said no. The attendant said then I'll have to charge you £3.50. I said then I'll take them home and put them in the bin. He said you might as well!

Well it seems from reading this thread that site managers and operatives of these recycling sites don't have the capacity to differentiate between a van carrying a large water tank, hose reel and other window cleaning paraphernalia as being a window cleaning van and so highly unlikely to be involved in carrying waste for "trade purposes".  In relation to another van having none of the aforementioned items on board.
But yeah maybe it would be a better thread to have on a waste recycler's forum so they can mull it over in between reading the Daily Star, swilling coffee and stuffing another pork pie down the pie 'ole.

How about you are not supposed to use a works van for private use like taking stuff down the tip etc.
I suppose that's one of the reasons why a lot of firms fit trackers to their vans so to see what their employees get up too.

Council run tips in my area do allow vehicles for business use to dispose of waste. That's if they buy a licence which costs less than 200 per year. If not any van/trailer even without any signage will get challenged and a restriction put on the vehicle.
