RO pre filters- seank?
« on: July 24, 2016, 06:37:46 am »
Hi seank / all ,

I need to order some replacement 10'' pre filters soon and wondering if these are ok?

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Pre-Filters-for-Reverse-Osmosis-Water-Filters-Replacement-RO-Filter-Set-/161638129738?nav=SEARCH

Iv been using the fibredyne prefilters as i thought it would be better, it says it replaces all 3 pre filters, but I'm sure I was advised to have a sediment pre filter with it.
These on eBay cost £9.45 for 3 , free postage - change them 4 times a year , cost £40 a year .
Fibredyne pre filters, 1 replaces all 3 pre filters?  If I change it 4 x year , £57.60
....but , it says they last upto twice as long , so only change the fibredyne twice a year and only cost £28.80.
If I need the sediment pre filter too , it'd be £33.72 a year .
I know we aren't talking much money here , but what gives the best protection for the membranes ?

Cheers

Ive gone from paranoia to practicle and what works well for me.
After i first set up my ro with 3 10inch pre filters and ssw the colour of my sediment filter (just about put me off drinking tap water), i went to using an additional sediment filter before it hit my main 3 pre filters.
Now i just use a sediment and the fibredyne and so far, been quite effective and cost effective as well.

In addition, i fill my 500ltr tank in van and then my 1000ibc tank. I only need to do this once a week. So i have started to flush my ro each morning for 10mins to help prevent build up of micro organisms living in filters.

Before your carbon filter there is still chlorine in the water so you won't have micro organisms living in there in any quantity.

Cheers Nathan , like I said , if using a sediment filter with the fibredyne it does work out cheaper if I only change them twice a year . But if I need to change more often then the standard 3 pre filters will do exactly the same job but cheaper.
Also , iv just realised that since changing over to fibredyne, that is when my resin use started to go up- whether or not it's got anything to do with that I really don't know, but I first started using fibredyne in November, and since then , I use a lot more resin than before when I used the 3 pre filters   ???

What would be the cost if you purchased the 3 prefilters and changed ur di resin. Monitor you tds after ro but before di.
When prefilters need changing, revert back to sediment and fibredyne and new resin and check/monitor tds again.
It may go a long way to answering any doubts.
Although theres been quite a few threads about the recent quality of resin and life span of it.

Nathan adding a second sediment filter is nothing more than a waste off money as its doing nothing if the first sediment
filter is doing its job, if you have a lot of sediment in your water then it will block the first the first filter it comes to thus reducing
the water flow, what wont happen is it starting to let sediment through to then be stopped by a second filter.
One sediment filter is all that's needed but may need changed more often if its getting blocked by high sediment amounts
in your water.
Tip, next time you change your sediment filter let it dry and I guarantee you will be less shocked by its colour.

Shrek I'm not sure about those filters, £10 for the three including delivery just sounds too cheap to be genuine.

The bottom of my statement highlights that now i just use a sediment filter and a fibredyne.
The 2 sediment filters etc etc was when i first started due to paranoia.

I could be wrong but I think Sean was saying you only need a fibredyne filter as this is a sediment filter aswell so no need for a fibredyne AND a sediment  ???
It does say on gardiners that it replaces all though
