What floor is this?
« on: July 18, 2016, 08:48:31 pm »
Hi Guys,
Could anyone offer advice as to what floor this could be as I have not come across it before.
Customer tells me that it is roughly 30 years old and seemed to think it was some kind of laminate style flooring which I can kind of understand as there is no grouting and it seems to have been slotted together.
It is solid to the touch and on first glance I thought it was ceramic.
There has been various items of furniture in the kitchen over the years which have left indentations as such which I don't think you can see in the picture.
Each piece is around three feet.
Any ideas would be much appreciated as I am stumped.
Thanks,
Rich.

Could be Amtico although it also has the look of Marmolium vinyl.

2nd Floor. Lingerie and haberdashery. Going up!
It's a game of three halves!

Do a tap and push test on it with a coin.  If you get a loud click it's tile, if you get a hollow sound or a slight indentation it will be either wood or laminate, if it is springy it is either Karndean, Amtico, Lino or cushion flooring!

Some of the marks on the floor look as though they have been scored with a coin!
Like I said the customer mentioned laminate/vinyl when I tapped the floor it was hard like a tile which is why I am puzzled ???

It looks like a modern porcelain made to look like wood but that was not around 30 years ago.  Simply take a sharp implement like a bradawl and try and push a hole into the floor in a corner or an unobtrusive place.  If it is wood, laminate or vinyl you will be able to penetrate it.  If you can't it's tile

Indentations suggest a resilient type flooring if it's 30 yes old that narrows it down its a tile so not a cushion floor and I have seen this pattern on old Amtico tiles boots had them in there shops at one time same pattern lighter colour

Looks like linoleum or Marmoleum. Which are basically the same thing. If it is you can't treat it the same as vinyl as it is a natural product.

I can virtually gaurantee that that is Amtico.
My father has the same floor fitted to his kitchen.
Your correct its at least 30 years old and was available in a number of tile configurations.

To distinguish between vinyl and linoleum a handy practical test is to heat a paper clip with a lighter and push it into an inconspicuous area. If it melts it's vinyl. If it more like trying to push a drawing pin into a notice board then it's linoleum.
