I've never bothered with those as filters only need to be hand tight anyway.

oil filter removal  pliers or strap only need to be hand tight

My resin filter needs more than hand tightening as it keeps leaking if not tightened with a wrench

Sounds to me the rubber seal has gone then as they too only need to be hand tight same as di vessels etc
