wall/render cleaning
« on: April 27, 2016, 07:46:22 am »
so guys ive been asked about cleaning green moss/algae off a customer walls.i have quite a few of these properties with marked walls/render.

its not something i want to offer really but if its just a case of getting some strong chemicals and using wfp then i might be tempted.

so do you guys just spray the walls with hypo(for example)with a 5l pressure sprayer and wfp off with an old brush?

What's this hypo stuff people are talking about ? One of my customer's has just asked me the same thing and would like to take it on.I was thinking algae off from the cleaning spot but £40 odd is a bit pricey.

Dazmond its a bit like cleaning painted fascia's, you don't know what the paintwork is going to be like underneath until
until all the dirt's removed so when they don't come up like new you could end up with a disgruntled customer.
Iv done a few and to be honest window cleaning is a lot handier plus no nasty chemicals to worry about.

Back pack or trolley is ideal, mix it based on how bad the jobs are.

I mix it 1/3 when pressure washing, but 1/10 on what jobs av done ( so to say soft washing ) did a job on Friday, quite a bit of cladding and some render, had no chemicals except hypo so disconnected my di bottles so I went direct to hose reels, and poured 10 litres of hypo into my tank, and job went well.

Ran water through afterwards and was back to using pure on Monday

Hypo is basically strong or pure (pure as you can buy) bleach. Its not a good idea to use it through a 5l pressure sprayer. Them sprayers just mist everywhere, creating a hazzard for you personally but also wasting it. Fine if you're spraying low level across a floor, you get the picture. Apply hypo with a backpack and wfp. But first why not try a test area, as you should anyway, with a bucket, strong bleach and a hand brush to get an idea of what you might achieve ?

I've just re read what you wrote...........hypo will only remove staining straight away, and some algae. In the case of moss, it will kill it, but it will not remove it. You'll have to wait for the moss to die, then remove it easily. If you're wanting it to kill moss then do not rinse it off. Leave it on and come back another day to remove the dead moss.

Hypo is ok if applied and used sensibly if you want near instant results.

Another option you could consider is to use a qats based biocide which works generally a lot slower and is a more expensive route of treating walls be it render, brick or stone to remove biological matter like green algae. Biocide treatments on some surfaces can take days, weeks or even months before you can start seeing results though. Then you may still have to re-apply to try to get rid of stubborn staining.

My understanding is the difference between hypo and the likes of algoclear pro is that hypo will kill algae etc on contact and will be fully nutralised within an hour. Whereas using a qats based biocide will contiue to work so has some residule benifit as is not rinsed off the surface during the treatment unlike hypo.  Hence why at the time of application the two chems have differing results when treating a surface.

You could try using this.
http://www.restormate.co.uk/epages/15094.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/15094/Products/JC-ALGEX
It works well

Do you know what active chem is in algex as there is no safety data sheet available on that site which I find very odd.

Interesting to note that Benz Blackwash is now apparently gov approved by HSE https://www.benzsoftwash.com/blogs/trade-tips/99248705-benz-blackwash-is-now-government-approved-by-the-pcs-and-hse
When I tried to look that up I could not find any referance to that HSE cert number either.  ::)roll

Ive got some high up skylights to do on a small hall. full of moss. Was thinking of using some high concentrate Dairy hydrochloride. Works great on connys, but might have to wait for moss to die off. Going to be a bit hard as its over 40 miles away

Benz blackwash and biocidal do impress me in the videos and no messing to other chemicals. The only thing that scares me is the possible problem if you mix the two by accident and suddenly you are breathing mustard gas.
I'm going to use for the thousands of new builds with blackening stone sills. Should bring in some custom as have been asked numerous time if there is anything I can do about it.
