For the last time!
« on: April 21, 2016, 05:15:43 pm »
I've asked before but never got round to doing it. I'm going to chuck my gas heater out and go down the immersion route. I have a 650l tank so I need to know which element to buy, which size, which hole cutter, silicone, flange nut and tool. The electrics I think I can work out - I have a load of Artic flex knocking about that might be big enough and an electrician lying about in his bedroom.

Those who have done it - got any links please?

I know there are a few on here that swear that the emersion heater route is the best way to go.

But you already have a gas heater. To me it makes more sense to heat the water as you are using it rather than heating a whole tank full.
Didn't Granville just heat one of his tanks leaving the other cold?  (I'm sure he has two together.)

I'm not happy anymore carrying gas, pretending the insurance is fine and the constant worry. I think I'll take it out,

I wouldn't like a gas bottle in the van TBH.

Why not look at fitting a tank underneath the van like the motorhomes do? You can then fill it at an LPG gas pump.

So now you've got a potential bomb underneath it instead ;D

length of immersion will depend on layout of tank, approx 14 inch to 27 inch, immersion heater flange 2 1/4 inch  hole cutter to match  immersion width and silicone............all from tool station

Did someone not mention in another thread that the emersion heater idea don't work very well on larger type baffled tanks?

If I remember right the chap was saying the water don’t get warm enough in the whole tank due to the baffles so was wanting to put in some sort of circulating pump to mix the water as it’s heated up overnight.

Don't know, I have a 650 upright tank. Mark Munro has a youtube clip with a bit of info. Problem I see is getting the element low enough in the tank to avoid a cold spot. I might need to make a tool to hold the flange because access if difficult and my arms not long enough to reach inside.  :)

There's a chap who builds an insulated tank with elements already in place , his been mentioned before by some it's about twice the price of Regular tank but doesn't have that drop in temperature  that the standard tanks have, to me seems the best option keeps water warmer longer not as much lost heat

There's a few on here who either have this and or will post the guys number I can't find it in present, tanks look very smart

If you really can't fit it near the bottom, one solution might be just to fit it as low as you can reach.  Say it's half way. Then if you would normally raise the whole 600l by ten degrees, it'll raise the top 300l by 20 degrees.  Then on the output from the pump to your reel fit a T connector with a length of hose going into the top of your tank.  It'll need a valve you can turn off when you want to use your pump for cleaning.  Switch it on and it'll circulate the cold water from the bottom of the tank into the top.  If your pump does 5L per minute you'd need it on for about an hour to circulate before you set off in the moring.  The biggest issue would be making sure the cold you were pumping into the top didn't just plummet back to the bottom, so you might want it going out through a handful of sprays to break up the flow so it wasn't smooth.

Even simpler, you could just use a large piece of wood to stir up the water before you leave.

A mate of mine uses a impeller set on a timer for 10. Minutes every 2 hours. He got it from an aquatics shop

It mixes itself as soon as you set off.
