Build Your own A frame Ladder
« on: May 18, 2006, 08:26:51 pm »
Has anyone ever taken on the task of building there own wooden A frame Ladders?

I built mine about four years ago, I had central heating installed, and they removed the storage tank from the loft, the tank was stood on two Lenghts of 4x4 timbers and i stopped the builders throwing them out. I was in my shed one night boared to tears (soap operas on tv) I was looking for something to do and came across these's timbers,

I was in need of a small A frame ladder. About 6' high would do nicely, Measured the timbers and just the right hieght. I found more solid wood timber in my junk box, and started to measure and cut, I now had all the timber i needed to build my A frame. I began by drilling all the holes for the Rungs so they were all in line useing a large forsner bit, once that was done I then took my 6 pieces of timber for the Rungs and began to turn them on my wood lathe, all six different lenghts. I then cut a A shape block of wood and cut a V shape into it (This would be the bit that sat against the frames) I assembed all the pieces and glued it all together,
To make it secure I drilled a couple of hole at the top and a couple down the bottom, both lots just below a Rung and added some threaded bar and bolted it all together, I forgot to mention I shamfered the edges of the lenghts with a router. Once this was all done it was then treated with wood preserver and then put into use,

They have been strored on the top of my car and left out side, for four
years now in all weathers, and used nearly every day, Total cost of the build was £1.50 and that was for the threaded bar, and I suppose I used a £1 worth of electric so total cost about £2.50.
If I can get my camera to talk to my computer I will put a picture on for all to see. I must say that in the four years I have had them, My 3 daughters, wife, myself, and two other professional wc have used them and not one person has fallen off them, unlike the time we used to use step ladders were accidents were all to frequent. all that use out of two lenghts of forty year old timbers.

I made a small pointer out of an old pair of alloy step ladders.
I just cut the middle section out of the rail that goes across  the top, drilled a hole each side and passed a piece of threaded bar through them, put a rubber boat trailer bobbin on the threaded bar, a washer and bolt each side and tightnend each in turn untill the sides pulled together and trapped the bobbin. It works a treat and have used it for 2 years. Dai

My first set I made was an old set of alloy steps, but I didn't go as far as you did, what I did was put the ladder upside down on two blocks and belted the top and sides, with a lump hammer, (ouch) and kept bringing the blocks closer together until I had a reasonable A shape, I then wrapped the top in foam to protect the frames, and to stop it slipping, I used them so much, I worn them out at the bottom, it wasn't until I had the timber, I decided to make a decent pair, I must admit its the most practical thing I have ever made.

I can just imagine what H&S would say to homemade ladders, cobbled out of an old ladder or two bits of 3x3 :o :o

I would agree with you on the alloy ladders,
but the timber ones, look just as good as any professional made ladders, and if they have lasted four years, and still going, with no accidents they cant be to bad? ???

Ok maybe for wooden, but dont try to alter ladder from original purpose.

Couldn't agree more, when I altered my alloy one's, we had a few accidents, nothing major, but once I made the timber one's,this changed and can report no accidents in four years.
I put this down to the V shape cut out on the top, it sits on a window edge with ease, this wasn't so with the alloy ones.

Its ok building your own ladders but it does have its pitfalls.

What happens if the worst happened and you were using a homemade ladder would the insurance pay out.
They try everything to get out of paying out and im sure they would say that they have no kite mark and are not trade ladders that have been properly tested.

I think it would be better to buy a proper ladder for the job instead of trying to save a few quid.

Just my thoughts

Paul

Thanks for the reply's gort and John, but like dave said its not an approved (kite marked) ladder, and if you did have an accident, it could come back to me, even with a disclaimer, i did look into makinging them but the cost of getting them approved is way beond my means.

I agree with you Paul on the British standard kite mark and insurance,

I would happily put my ladders through any british standard  test they do for factory made wooden A frames,

They are made of hard wood, the same as BS, they are bolted together, factory made one's arn't, they were made by hand and took me about 4 hrs to make, with the time and care no BS would get, although the BS are built on jig's and take less than 20 minutes to make a six foot set, But I think £2.50 against £100.00 is more than a few quide saving.
I am trying hardest to get my camera and computer to work together, then I will post a couple of picture,s of them, and also to have had the approval of another couple of professional WC thats good enough for me.

My advise would be leave the ladders to the professional manufacturers.

They are built to set tolerences and unless you are a qualified engineer , leave well alone.

That is my opinion

My suggestion was aimed at less competent people , i was not knocking your ladder.

I am sure it is a very good ladder.  :)

Wor Lass and I have had a few minor accidents using A-Frames, and although non of them were because of manufacturing defects, they should still be treated with respect.

I nearly ended up headfirst through a shop window once (cleaning the inside of a bakery with a greasy floor).

I would be against recommending window cleaners manufacturing their own.

I have now been able to get my camera to become freinds with my computer, so I have posted a picture of the ladder I built myself.
sorry its only a small picture but its from my phone.
