By making sure you go out everyday. If you yourself are only going to be on short time in the winter then you can contract them to that. You lay out what you are offering.

Just work and pay normally. I guess like you the employee still has to live through the winter.

Yes just work and pay them normally,
Have enough commercial/rainy day work that can be done whatever the weather.
Winter is near on over now anyway, luckily this country doesnt get that bad so i wouldnt worry.

My two lads are on twenty hour contracts that i have always been able to honour without paying out of my own pocket, they generally do about 30 hours in winter and 40-50 in summer.

As always some great reply's, I have been in this business for 27 years, only in the last 4 years have I been employing people, not directly but sub contracting. As some have mentioned we have never really missed a week through the winter. Over the last couple of years our work load has been vastly increasing year by year, and now we have 4 subbing. I realize that now I have to run the business in a much more professional way. I am just trying to pick your brains as to how you all manage through the winter months. Over the last two years we have been directly asking customers if we see fascia's or gutters that need cleaning would they like it done? and the response has been amazing, so many say yes. The only thing that i am in the dark about is the contract.  To get it right i would love to know more about.
