Suspect that everybody's spend is different - factors such as amount of competition, your ad quality and determination to be top of the pile.

You could easily spend hundreds for very little return.  Getting a good return from as little spend as possible is the art of it.  Not an expert myself.

Paul

Your question is the wrong way around at looking at Adwords.  Adwords is so different to other types of media. it can be tracked and then you cost per prospect, cost per sale can be worked out.  below is a link to a page of mine that will give real cost per customer numbers from adwords

http://www.cleanonomics.cleaning-carpet.co.uk/cost-of-a-customer/

so the next question is how many do you want to buy?

on my last report cpc is averaging out at around £1.30......  quite higher in some of the  less performing areas.....
better in others..........  no idea if that is too high, no doubt somebody can tell me???  i tend not to go by cpc per month,
rather, i look at how much turnover they bring me each month............

I don't do adwords.. Maybe I should.

But that seems like a lot of money unless you are getting a very good return from it.

Tim , does the £450 pm include your management fee to CCN ?
This is the season for fine wine, and drunken friends, enjoy this moment, for this moment is your life.

Why do you need adwords in november after so many years in business?

I just never paused it, the cost was nominal and in November  I still had spaces available. So i just let it run.

Hi
Tim did you check you ROI on this .  The 450 figure is very high for an independent operator. Mikes 150 figure is more the bench mark area, it's similar to mine.
The trick is to monitor who is coming in on what keywords and use the cheaper ones.  And avoid the 1.30 clicks like the plaque. They might get you top in your area but if it costs 100 clicks to get one job it's poor ROI and false economy.

The exspensive click will always be the most popular and well use search terms, that's why the are expensive, everybody bids for them

I find.........  *town* carpet cleaners or *town* carpet cleaning ( **** being the name of your local town) is the most well searched term, so cost the most ( £1.90 in my case)  cheaper search terms are cheap for a  reason..... they are rarely searched so no one bids On them.

I could delete popular search term from my campaign and half my cost but why delete the biggest search term?  it would be counter-productive.

In the end it's all about the maths, my monthly cost are slightly more than my average job value  so one job a month nearly pays for my Adwords campaign,  2 jobs  means I break Even on all my costs, over 2 jobs and I'm in profit from the campaign.  Unless I am so busy that I cannot fit in2 extra jobs a month then I might as well do Adwords ( unless the cost of Adwords is an amount that could be spent on other marketing that would bring in more than 2 jobs......but that's thoughts for another topic)

I sacked my adwords manager/company when i discovered how to check what customers typed in to find me and then clicked me. enough was enough when one search phrase they typed in said "rug doctor carpet cleaner in cheshire" . and i paid £1.70 for the privilege. After doing all the checks i worked out my £400 a month bill should of been around what Mike is paying. Plus his management fee, disgraceful.
