Just watched which ever end of the chanel is leading and do as few moves as possible. If you're just doing houses, you don't want to be too fast anyway -  they think they're being done!

HI DAVE, welcome to the forem, these guys have helped me no end, always some one has an answer to a prob.

Dont worry about speed, carry on as you are, do a good job & the speed comes, its not so much speed but where you place your ladders & the way you go about it. you will find in a couple of months you will be working tottaly different.

i presume your trad why not post to see if you can go out with some one on here for a day or two, get some good tips that way.

as for speed mate, when i started 15 years ago, what took me all day & i was nackered would take me 2 hrs tops now & thats if i worked trad, im wfp now, 6 months.

AT the moment you only in 1st gear mate, wait till your in 6th, by the way, 6th has over drive, your ladders & trainers will be smoking.

and dont be cheap with your prices, if you get every job then you are to cheap, there are more windows than window cleaners, if you go to fast when you are just starting out, then your own safety can be compromised, so safe and happy cleaning :)

When i first started off window cleaning, i was really slow. I am certain everybody on here was the same, but after time, you will get faster! But what i always say is it is better to clean one window right than do a bad job on a whole house.
Practice, practice practice. This time next year you will be a speed demon yourself! :)

Speed will come with practice like in any trade you have to learn to do it correct that way you wont make mistakes, if you try to run before you can walk you will make mistakes this will reflect badly on your business so take your time and do a good job and you will get a good reputation.
You should see some of the cowboy window cleaners round our way they give us good window cleaners a bad name

best of luck

I agree with Andy.  Be carefull with your prices.

After starting off and charging too cheaply, I find I'm still suffering in many areas from charging too little to begin with; after three years.

You won't be doing yourself or your customers any favours if you do 'go cheap'.

Also, don't suffer 'bad' customers.  Drop them straight away; or if you're tolerant, warn them nicely, then drop them if they mess you about in future.

Don't take any, 'not this month', and the such.

As for speed, stick with it, read plenty of posts here; and it'll come.

When you first start window cleaning your body probably isn't used to climbing ladders; humping buckets of water and ladders around; and your technique will need some development.

Do you know any window cleaners in your area who'd take you out for a day and show you a few 'tricks of the trade', so to speak?

If not, why not ask here?

I think that's the best of my tips, and I can't be bothered to write it all out again. ;D

Hope it helps in some way.

When i started I had to try and keep up with someone. You soon pick up speed that way. Working with someone really speeds you up and you see how they do it. Try it if you can. But never rush the positioning of ladders... Its all in the wrist my friend.

It'll take you a few months to get up to a reasonable speed, window cleaning is a skill, it takes time to develop it.

Mr Average window cleaner will clean a standard casement window; thats 1 opening light, 1 pane beneath it and 1 opening pane to the side. in 90 seconds.

That is your benchmark, if you can acheive that you are doing ok.
That includes washing the glass, detailing and wiping down the sill.

You just have to develop your technique and train your muscles, and I don't mean make them stronger!
To begin with you are thinking about everything you do, after time your muscles 'know' what to do, your eyes 'know' what to pick up on.

Keep working at it, watch other window cleaners at work and see if you can pick up some pointers that will help you.

You'll also find this forum a great help too.
