I have the best answer to this as I have come across this, when they tap there pockets and say they need to go to the bank I  say no need to go to the bank now as  I have a pay pal card reader you want to see there face.

This wins every time hope this helps best thing I ever bought for these situations.

What happens when they say they have no money left on the credit card  or their debit card will not work either as they have no money in the bank?  Declined transation springs to mind ;D

Pursue her!
Send a Thomas Higgins letter if you have to,
Never let anyone take the mick over money as you've earned it, I do loads of jobs where I just leave a bill and never meet the customer and everyone pays eventually.

No need for Thomas Higgins. Here's my letter:

NOTICE OF INTENDED COURT PROCEEDINGS

TAKE NOTICE that according to our records the sum of £32 is overdue for payment despite previous reminders.

Unless payment is made to the above address within SEVEN days Legal Action to recover the debt will be taken against you without further notice. This may affect your credit rating. The costs associated with legal proceedings must also be paid by you in addition to the debt.

A printed copy of the statements are attached. I look forward to your immediate payment.

Had a customer like that when I ran a newsagents . Waited till I saw him talking to someone went straight up to him interrupted his conservation and asked when I was going to get paid . The look of embaresment was worth what he owed but I was paid next day.
Just wait till you see them in a crowd then go for it

Legally, you may struggle.  Quotations over £35 are supposed to have paperwork accompanying them giving the option of 14 days to cancel...

This is with reference to cold calling doorstep selling (canvassing), not if they've phoned/emailed you or asked you to provide the service. The figure has also now changed to over £42.

Thanks for the amendment.  I didn't realise it had increased to £42.
As for only applying to coldcallers, the site isn't clear about that.  It only names the places where the sale takes place, but is silent about who has to initiate the contact for the regulation to apply.  I suppose that if someone phones me and I sell the service at their house, it would apply (assuming £42+).
I have a pre-printed form even for simple quotations these days as it saves on misunderstandings.  I started doing that after I quoted some years ago, and the person expected the inside to be cleaned for that too.  I think they were actually genuine rather than trying it on - an elderly person who had lost track of a few things.

I had exactly the same thing happen although I reckon mine was trying it on.

i have 10 letters printed and ready to post for non payers, ranging form £6 to £30

ive decided to do this with all non payers, a letter saying you are removed from the round and requesting payment within 14 days otherwise small claims, its £25 to file a small claim and as long as you have proof (texts or emails) then theres no reason why you wouldnt get whats due.

will be interesting to see if any cough up at the threat of it anyhow
