Hi Everyone,

I took on a member of staff in May to help cover school holidays and time off I needed and so that I could concentrate on growing the business ( doubled it so far!)  so its just me and her at the moment.  She already had a booked a holiday at the beginning of August for 2 weeks before I took her on so obviously had to authorise it.
She has now text me saying she has just booked next years holiday. No holiday request form completed, no mention of it to see if the dates are available etc etc just gone ahead and booked it!
I suspect her husband is behind it but now i'm in a predicament as the dates that she has booked are the 2 weeks that my partner has off next year ( shut down that's compulsory) The 2 weeks she has booked are probably the worst two weeks next year ( due to personal things too) to have done it  as the reason I hired her was so that I could have a break ( Have not had a proper one since I started the business)

Now I plan to take on more staff soon, but it depends on the need of the business, we are planning on extending the family soon and depending on how fast that happens I am either going to grow it more and take on more staff or leave it as it is until after. If I leave it as it is then it will just be her and I will cover etc but not on those two weeks!

Either way if I decline the holiday ( I have told her she needs to fill in a holiday form) she will probably take it anyway!

What would you do and do I decline it and go down a disciplinary route of she doesn't turn in for work for two weeks?

In all the jobs I have had I have always had to get the time off I needed authorised before I booked anything, is this not the case anymore? lol

Thanks

Isla

There not much we can do. Am guessing u referring to cleaning staff.
I have many problems with cleaning staff an with regards to holidays if they give me a months notice then am happy I will not allow days off to be used as hols but it is wot it is. If they not playin ball ur way an u not happy just get rid

The simple solution is to hold a meeting with the employee (with a witness) and go through your contract of employment pointing out holidays are on a first come first served basis and approved AFTER receiving a holiday request form, unfortunately these two weeks are already taken by yourself.

If they then fail to turn up for work its gross misconduct ( depends on your contract ) and take the appropriate action you feel is required.

A lot depends on your contract of employment and paperwork make sure you cover yourself for every situation. Have a good paper trail for sickness, lateness, poor cleaning (snags) etc

You can speak to her and She might say all the right things and be full of apologies but when the time comes she will take the 2 weeks, if she thinks she will be sacked her work will decline leading up to the time and she will already have another job lined up for when she gets back from her holiday.

she knows what she has done is wrong but had decided to do it anyhow and accept any consequences, nothing you say will make any difference,

I would get rid of her now whilst you still can, sounds like she will just keep creating aggro for you.
