2 MAN SET UP or BUY ANOTHER VAN? ?
« on: August 20, 2015, 08:04:07 pm »
I  have so much work that its impossible to take on anymore and working flat out , so need to either get a twin setup and have  a trainee by my side or buy another van and have him go out on his own .

TWIN SET-UP   =   I can keep an eye out on my employee         TWIN SET-UP   =   would probably need 1000litre a day
PROS          =   It will be cheaper                                                                 CONS            =   not sure we could do more work than if out2vans
=   someone to chat with                                                                                 =    customers could complain about the speed
=   could pay less than if out on his own

2 VANS PROS    = get a lot of work done                                                2 VAN CONS     = overheads are £100s more a month
= can leave him to it if i need a holiday                                                    = cant keep an eye out
                                    = looks good for business
                                    = can cover different areas
                                    =  can carry a 650litre tank each

Does anyone on here employ using a twin set up or have done both ways ?  What is your opinion  ?

Idealy i would like to make at least £100 profit each day from an employee  , I know i can do this if i buy another van but is it possible to do this with a twin set up?  Say for example i clean 10  houses a day on my own at £20   = £200  could i do another 8 houses at £20  = £160  with an employee  ,Pay him say £60  and i get my £100 +  my usual £200  =£300

I'm thinking when i have houses all clumped together we can do a house each etc. . but when we have to share a house it might not be that fast  and customers might not like it .

Whats your opinions on this ?

Get a second van and pay a decent wage to get the most out of him. If you pay someone peanuts to work with you, they'll end up your competition.

I had someone for 7 years out of a second van. Kept him on a very good percentage of daily workload. He's now a franchisee

We do both, single and two man, depends on the work, tbh I would get your current set up to a 2 man system because it's going to be a good three months before any employee will be up to speed/technique and attitude you want to instill in them, that's even before they are learnt the rounds and you know they are trustworthy.

The two man set up allows you full control over an employee, once fully trained, know the rounds and your happy they will be reliable you can then move forward and get a van suitable for a single operator ( Citroen dispatch or ford connect are ideal )

On average our 2 men teams achieve around 60% more than a single man ( say £300 for a single a two man will do around £450 to £500 )
But it's dependant on the round and how compact it is and the number of cleans that can be done in a stop without moving.
For conservatory, SFG cleans, larger works/commercial 2 men can usually produce twice a single, as they get less tired with the more demanding cleans

Cheers Sunshine
, Yeh maybe the employee will build up a lot of resentment working for peanuts , I'm thinking of paying 40% a day which will be quite a good pay for them , Do have problems with them skiving off , bad work etc.. ?

That does sound like a good plan to me actually  and makes good sense , How much water do you find you use with a twin set up as on my own i do 400-600 litres so would probably need to get a 1000litre tank ?

Without knowing your set-up and how you clean its difficault to give an accurate answer, I've rarely used more than 400 even on a busy day same for the lads on regular cleaning work, and 2 men usually use 600 to 700. But with training and the new guy being a bit slow so wasting water I'd upgrade to a 1000 litres as long as your van can take it.

Cheers Darran , Iv'e got a 650litre tank so il buy another 200 litre that should be fine for weight as would rather not stretch to a 1000 litre .   I better start looking for someone !  :)
