Steve.

How do you get this over the gate?

Have a copycat ladder like this , think it was from somewhere like screwfix it's fairy heavy.

Basically ladder looks like "/\" gates in between.

maybe I`m too weedy ;D

This is the screwfix 4 rung version. It is heavy but does the job well.

I assume you charge full price if locked, otherwise there's no reason to be smug. If you text a lot of customers, your day is planned and there may not be an easy way to make up the income. If you employ, that's not good. The Screwfix ladder is heavy but solid. Does anyone know the comparative weights?

Same here. Bolts I can deal with most of the time. Locks, it's get a key or a call/text.

I've broken a couple of gates due to them being improperly fitted, two came clean off the hinges and I took a fall as a result, and others have rotted and I've ended up injuring myself. A friend of mine nearly broke his back after falling off the top of a shed roof when part of it broke as he was trying to climb into a customers garden. This was all to make an extra couple of £s.  Not worth the risk in my book. The Screwfix ladder looks good and if I were younger I'd definitely consider getting one but I'm not as flexible as I used to be and that would still represent a risk I'm not prepared to take. I lost nearly 2 years of my working life due to misjudging a situation at work and badly breaking an ankle. I'm not about to do the same over a locked gate and a couple of £s

Mate don't be such a drama queen, if you don't want to get over a locked gate fair enough but don't start spouting
nonsense to justify it.

Guys sorry for sounding so rude but it has already been explained how to get over a gate rotten or not without
touching it plus Jonny's picture shows how.
Plus my wife broke her ankle at the bottom of our stairs a few years back when she slipped does that men we should put the bed in the living room.
You just get fed up with this same old health and safety nonsense.

Sean matey...there are times when you really need to shut up :)   the guy wasn't slagging anyone
seemed a reasonable post to me, cant see what nonsense he was spouting  or any justification
you really are at times a miserable git. :)

If I was to climb over gates/fences I would use one of those little giant ladders but I really
cant be bothered. :)

Well I suppose it is an extra safety risk too but really, it's just an extra bit of hassle I'd rather not have.
There was a time when I would't even take on work where I was required to pre-notify; I've been window cleaning since the days before mobile phones and I suppose it just became a habit.  For years I only had three or four customers who I phoned in advance by landline.  Since I have been taking on a few more jobs where I text in advance, they have been the jobs that have given the most headaches.  90% of the hassle I get is from the 5% of locked gate jobs.  Even if they are reliable about leaving it unlocked, I still have to calculate how long work is likely to take to know whether I will be there the next day or the one after.  Then it can make it hard to do new work that comes my was from a walk-up due to timing.
I have even considered going on a canvassing spree just to replace them.

Exactly Garry and that's your choice, but don't start harping on about selling your safety for the sake of a few quid
or going on about rotten gates when its already been explained how to get over them without causing further damage.

The guy wasn't selling anything just told of past experience and even said he would get a little
giant if he felt more  nimble, as he doesn't didn't want to  risk it.

I used to split my doubles  and climb over and damaged a fence, if I had known about the little
giant idea I would of bought one, but nearly ten years since I climbed over a fence and all I personally
see is faff and hassle which I cant be bothered with, clean and charge for front move on next job
get finished for the day as quick as possible..if I occasionally lose a tiny bit of income I can live with
it.

Anyways lighten up a bit you miserable git ;D

It's not easy is it mate. They are heavier than I would like, it is a bit of a struggle sometimes.

I normally just extend one side, lift it over, then drop the legs down on the side that I'm standing. Makes it a tad easier, but is still heavy.

The 4.6m multi position ladder is a lot lighter and a lot cheaper, it doesn't have the quality of the little giant but will
more than do the job if your looking for a lighter alternative.

That's ok, but it's getting it back that's the struggle. I text and if they are locked I go over with the Screwfix ladder. If they aren't happy with me doing that it's full price if locked.

All gates are open except one custy who forgets sometimes but only bolted and it's an easy climb over a wall .

If their is a time when one is locked I am happy to lose a few quid by not doing backs , than messing on or risking injury and losing a 2 days work .

Hi SeanK

My apologies for giving you cause to get fired up with my first post on this thread. I absolutely respect your right to your oppinion on both my comments and me being a 'drama queen' if that's what you think.
However, I don't believe anything I said was nonsense and I stand by everything I said. Sometimes the little gain is just not worth the risk. If we seriously hurt ourselves or worse, it's no skin off the customer's nose, they will just grab the next window cleaner that comes along. But we and our families will have to deal with the fallout. I'm speaking from experience. When I had my accident my wife was two weeks from delivering out third child. It was a lot of stress she could have done without, all because I took a big risk that I kidded myself was a small risk to make a few extra pounds. The consequenses of what I did still affect me now 15 years later. I would absolutely not do it now. That is why I agreed with the comments of Mike#1

Best regards to all

Mark
