well my RO-MAN 60 gal RO came with a gate valve that you turn to flush the membranes

as for chaning the pre-filters, i havent i near 2 years, its still outputting the same amount of water and still works fine --- people say not changing them will ruin the RO membrane, but ive had my money out of it in 2 years so i will then replace the whole unit for 70 odd quid from RO-MAN

Mines the same. It has a flush tap already fitted to it.

I haven't changed the filters or resin for 8 months now and it's still giving me 000tds (My tds from tap is only 38 ;D ;D).

I flush mine everyday for about 5 - 10 minutes.

I have replacement filters ready to go in if i need them.

I think if you flush the system more it helps prolong the life of the filters.

well i use 150 L a day, 3 days a week, and the system is 2 years old this month, i havent changed the prefilters, and ive used about 2 KG of resin in the 2 years

i cannot say if they need changing as they say they do, but 2 years useage for 70 quid, it cannot be bad

Does any one else use ro-man systems? if so how often do you change the pre filters
the ro-man recomended interval is 3500 uk gallons or 800 - 1200 ltrs of product water , for me that means changing them about once every 6 or 7 weeks im on my 3rd set since i went wfp last november (which was low water use a first but getting more & more as the months go by)
I dont want to change them too often if i dont have to
Its £15.25 per change

Changing pre-filters will increase the life-span of your RO unit, I try to change mine every 4 months. Combine this with regularly flushing the membrane and you can extend your membrane life to in excess of 6 years.

To give you an example of not doing this, my first RO unit came from one of the 'big boy' suppliers years ago and came with no maintenance instructions so I never changed the pre-filters just 1 year later my membrane production had slowed right down to about half (still at a low tds though) and I had to buy a completely new unit.

Alex you use 2x ro-man systems if I remember do you have 10'' or 20'' filters, cause if you change every 4 months it might be better for me to use 20'' if they last 4 months

The purpose of the carbon filters is solely to remove chlorine. The presediment just removes large particles. Regular flushing is the key here so that everything works to peak efficiency. We do in fact have very low levels of chlorine here in the UK so the carbon filters will easily cope with it's removal for more than the recommended thoughput if flushed well and regularly. The 10 inch ones are fine for the size of RO we are talking about here. Change them every 4 to 6 months and you will get a very good life out of what are after all quite cheap replacement RO membranes.

Cheers

even though ro-man say (for me anyway) that they should be changed at 6/7 weekly intervals you think 4/6 months is more than often enough, if so ro-man are ripping me off a bit possibly :o

No way would I even suggest a rip-off of any kind Chris.

Any retailer/manufacturer with half a brain has to take into account the good old human factor. In this instance.. in my opinion flushing. Figures are quoted with a margin allowed for all sorts of factors. Not just for Ro's but all sorts of things. Would you trust every customer to rigidly stick to instuctions?  I wouldnt. It's not that folks are deliberate in not following instructions. it's just that they are human.

EG.  Last week a local customer for the Freedom trolley system popped in for a small spare part. He was saying that whatever he did he always got spotting. He is on his 4th or 5th time around so spotting should really be a thing of the past especially on repeat cleans. The part was for his pole. He got it out of his vehicle and it was immediately apparent what his problem was. The brush looked like the ones I use to put black shoe polish on!!!!! I ran my fingers through it and it was full of grit. Now.. its common sense to clean your brush regularly isnt it? Well the impression he had was that the pure water running through the brush whilst cleaning would keep it clean anyway.  He honestly thought that was enough. When i pointed this out to him he didnt get upset.. he was just glad to have a reason for his problems.  Yes I did give him this info when he got his system but.. oh well...  folks  :)

Cheers

Hi Chris,

I use 10" filters, which as the good man Andrew has pointed out are more than adequate.

Our operating guide recommends 4 month changes for a single operator system or 2-3 months for a dual-operator system.

Some may find they can get away with longer periods others less so. We have some people that buy pre-filters from us that change them every month! (I wouldn't say it was needed).

Its all to do with the tap water in your area.  Seems like Matt's water is very soft and his water treatment system has very little to do.

So is there some table of calculations that can be referred to in order to ascertain the likely life of a filters then? or is this another guessing game?
