Iron fence cleaning
« on: May 01, 2015, 12:14:52 pm »
Afternoon guys

Could anyone advise the best way to clean an iron fence please? Similar to this: http://www.dakotafabwelding.com/images/sample-gate03.jpg

I was wondering about soaking in virosol and then a light pressure clean with our electric Stigl pressure washer? I hind the petrol Honda machine would strip the paint off.

Has anyone done anything similar and could perhaps offer a couple of tips?

Thanks
Tom

What is the coating, and the condition on the fence you want to clean ?

Hi Tom, if i was cleaning those railings i would dampen magic eraser pads with a safe cleaning solution and scrub them by hand as it would do a better job than using a pressure washer, then just rinse them off with microfiber cloths, surface would be deep cleaned and dry then perfect to coat with a nano coating which would help for future maintenance, just charge accordingly.

Thanks guys for your replies.

There's a lot there to clean and would take forever to do by hand. Would virosol and pressure clean do the job?

They're quite green. Black painted and the condition of them is pretty good.

Thanks

Hi Tom, its only a suggestion  but magic eraser pads soaked in a non-caustic non-corrosive cleaning solution will eat through heavy green algae build up, it is actually very quick and easy to do but is also far more effective than using chemical and a pressure washer.

Do you mean algoclear Chris - or you worried that mentioning the name Mike might start bugging  to pay for advertising ??

Only problem with the above its not an instant fix, most customers like to see a change on the day you come and do the job

Most people might also like the paint remaining on the railings.
Algoclear is nothing to do with me. I would recommend a Honda pressure washer…Honda is nothing to do with me. Rutland pumps is nothing to do with me. ;D

Didn't you show a job you had done with Algoclear a while back Darren ?   It looked really good,  but I am confused now, as I thought you just left the product on, and the day after the surface was clean ?

Yes I did,  I used algo clear for the killing benefits it offered but it had to be repainted further down the line 2 wks then I was able to gently wash the algae off without damaging the existing covering (tyro lean)

For jobs where I'm not returning I wouldn't use algoclear.

Railings are a ball ache no matter the method, but I'd go wfp  with a vikan brush as you really can cover some ground (3 rails at a time)
