Ro filter & scale reducer
« on: April 27, 2006, 10:39:47 pm »
I have been wondering today what effect a limescale reducer would have if fitted before the RO filter inlet, in theory it would change the structure of calcium crystals and stop them adhering to themselfs and other things ie the membrane, the calcium wouldnt be able to cling on and so would flush away easier perhaps, or maybe it could dissolve and clog the membrane, does anyone use one of the above if so do you find it has any effect on your RO? or do I have to start experementing  ;D

water softening resin does exactly this...removes the calcium and magnesium from the water before the RO...I have a resin cylinder full of the stuff as the first filter. Every 4-500 litres of pure water made, I regenerate the resin (water softening) by flushing cylinder through with a salt water solution.

in shed...

TDS of 280 from outside tap into the following setup:

1) DI vessel with water softening resin
2) carbon block filter (10")
3) wound polyester filter(10")
4) 40" RO filter

water comes out RO at 2-8 TDS into 2 x connected 220Litre water butts.
In the water butts sits a submersible pump connected to 32mm delivery hose. In my 400Litre van tank, I have a short length of 32mm delivery hose.
When needing water, I back van up to back gate, take end of hose from van tank and connect to hose on submersible pump, turn on pump and van is full in less than 5 minutes.
Between the van tank and hose reel is a DI vessel with DI resin, which brings water to 000TDS.
