Trade Counters & Shops
« on: March 07, 2015, 09:23:14 am »
Hi All

Hope all have had a good start to the year

I want to do a bit of market research, we are currently in the process of moving to new premises, we will be putting in place a trade counter supplying window cleaning equipment and supplies.

For those of you that shop over the counter or would if you had somewhere local what would be important to you and what would you like to see in store

Thanks in advance for any feedback

Charlie

simply have what i want in stock and at a reasonable price or matching what i can get it for online. Be able to see products and look them over if i was interested in buying them (like poles etc). The person behind the counter to have the authority to provide discounts and to know what he or she is talking about in regards to the products you sell.  Preferably have the same persons behind the counter all the time, Oh and a coffee machine that provides a free cup of coffee  ;D.

Must be hard competing with online sellers who can operate with less costs. Good luck mate.

We currently T/O £100k ish a year over the trade counter, this is including pure water sales

It is a different market, we have a web side and that all small disposable items but people like to see items we are finding over the £100 mark and have a play

What we hope is to have a place that shiners can come on a rainy day or once a month and check out new kit and pick up all they need for the month

I think the biggest problem with shops/sales etc etc Is very few people actually clean windows (I think alex is the only guy i know who still does)

It would be nice when i do say a joke about a wfp issue over the phone or in person the other person actually understands instead of saying Last 3 numbers on the back please.

My jokes are funny, so i know thats not the case.

What i mean by this is if i do ask a question i get an answer not an Urmmmmm i dont know.

Very valid point, the product is only as good as the person selling it understanding it, note to self, find someone that knows what's what with window cleaning!!!

Be better if they cleaned windows as well. It's nice to have some rapour (spelling?) going. I love the fact Alex drops in something like "yeah when i was cleaning last week, i came up with an idea"

If i have had a hard week and go see grippatank or someone. It's nice to know cleaning is still there :)

Not saying you should employ a window cleaner. But an ex window cleaner, who maybe still cleans an odd few days or something. Just so they KNOW what it's like in the battlefield.

The people coming in to see you will be cleaners. I doubt the boss of 15 lads will come in from the rain and ask about the latest unger flipadoamabob. Might be wrong.

Failing this.

Open a shop in bedfordshire and i will run it ;)

Sounds good. One thing that really annoys me is when you meet another window cleaner and you can spend 10-60 mins chatting if ya have spare time. Show them this, show them that. They then order from said company. I am technically selling for said company, i don't get anything out of it. Same with the other chap, he convinced me to buy an a frame and the company to go to. Now wouldn't it be nice if i rang up and said, been speaking to so and so and here is discount card number. Right sir. Instead of getting a generic day to deliver you parcel. How about we upgrade it to DPD one hour slot. So you don't have to waste a whole day.

You should offer DPD as an option.

I have paid £10 to DPD just to upgrade for a desperate part. So i can work a day and get my parcel.

How about a dedicated APP for iphone and other lesser phones.

The list goes on and on and on. Well for me anyway.

Videos!!!!!

I don't want to see a video of a bloke in a shirt and tie telling me about a brand new sodding pole that hasnt been out of the factory.

I want Dave from Essex, in his van giving it the thumbs up and showing me what its like.

It's not rocket science LOL

Ha! Depends on what market you are going after.

I use a company, cheap and cheerful.

Website is dreadful, customer service aint great. Prices are good.

However i would pay more, but other companies don't seem to stock what they do.

I can see where the industry is going, but i haven't got the capital or time to do it. But i am helping another company now to make my ideas happen :)

Open a shop in Stevenage.

We did have a shop/trade counter run by Turners cleaning it closed when they sold the business.

For me I like good service and reasonable prices.
A place to go to get consumables like rubber, scrim etc

I only go to a shop when it's something I've forgot and need quick other wise the Internet serves my needs. Well.

As No 23 said a shop is good for a place to build a rapour and relationship if so one knows what there talking about it help to sell the products.

I popped over to see grippatank about a month ago just to pick up a rubber o ring and ended up spending £100 on brushes,o rings and fittings.this was all helped by the fact I could see and touch the product. As well a speak to oliver for advice.

Good job you didn't get the sales girl. Could have been a £1000 lol

A local trade counter would be invaluable and I would ber prepared to pay a little more for items if I could collect them very locally.  Ordering stuff online doesn't work well for me unless it's a small item that Royal Mail can deal with via ordinary postperson.  This is because I live in a flat with a trade button on the intercom that switches off around 10AM.  I live on my own so don't want to potentially wait in all day for a courier.  A courier can't get through communal front door to leave a calling card in my letter box.  However, the postperson can time his/her walk to deliver before trade button switches off.  If I'm out working a card gets left and I collect from post office (5 min walk).

The two local outlets for window cleaning stuff are as follows:  One is difficult to get hold of on the phone and will open their unit on request when they can get around to it (they really do try to help but having to make an appointment can be tricky).  The other is a general cleaning shop where stuff is usually brought from another area twice a week.  Both carry little stock so a fews days wait is often the way; if I need something urgently I drive 25 miles for it.  Neither outlet is greatly clued up about window cleaning beyond the basics.  A number of times I have been specific about what I want and have been told thaty the one they supply is better - even though I have the experience to know otherwise.  Indeed, at the cleaning shop I ignore their advice on general cleaning stuff because I already know that their advice on WFP stuff is geared to sales rather than what's best for me.
I do carry spares of pretty much everything but inevitably a day arrives when I get caught out.
