van insurance crazy quotes!!
« on: February 13, 2015, 05:22:25 pm »
hi guys sorry to ask for help again!
I've been holding a clean driving licence for over 18 months.
I was thinking of buying a citroen berlingo van and have it properly set up.
the big problem is that  I struggle to find an insurer!
I've so far only been given 3 quotes and the cheapest one is:over £3300 !!!
is that norm just because I'm a new driver???
Any help very much appreciated as I'm supposed to go and look at the van tomorrow
Many thanks

Try Aplan, they're pretty good, had recent dealings with them, they beat my original renewal by £30 and with lots of extras, but I had to haggle!

Not sure why you're getting quoted £3000 though, that's crazy. Have you literally only been driving for 18 months? I know the prices have shot up for new drivers in the past few years, but it shouldn't be that much for a van surely. Might be wrong though.

Put a more experience driver down as a named driver. (Not main driver) that usually helps...

thanks for your help
I was on the phone to aviva for over 1 hour everything was going fine!
a quote for :£421 a year was given.
So far so good . pretty happy with the price!
Alas after going through every details to make sure everything was fine!
I mentioned that I would have a water tank installed soon but for the time beeing I would be keeping  some full jerry cans at the back of the van ( so I can keep working with my pack back. The wind then turned!! they say there was no problem to insure me with a water tank installed but they wouldn't insure me if I had jerry cans at the back as they would consider it to be a serious potential hazard!!
gotta try a plan tomorrow!
I'm 45 mick . yes I know I know

jerry cans are for petrol/deisel thats proably why think it a serious potential hazard, just tell em you will have a water tank in the back

Mine was £320 for the year with aviva (tank declared)

How long until you fix a tank down..?
(I'll probably get shot down for this but...)if its soon, cant you just get it insured with the fixed tank option you posted?
Then get the tank in asap, the cost of a tank to be fitted + your insurance will be cheaper than carrying jerry cans by the sounds of it!!!
Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

Try http://www.morethanbusiness.com/products/van-insurance in the drop down menu for modifications, there is 'water tank'
It probably won't affect the premium at all.
It'll take you 10 minutes to do. Let us know how you get on if you do...

Mick, is your insurance a fleet policy, or separate policies?

Really?!
Mine was less than £400. I'm younger than you and only got 3 years NCB on the van.

You're 45?
How long have you been driving?
Any points?
Convictions?
Bans?

Your quotes are high due to you being a fairly new driver. In my first year I had to pay £1500 (not declaring tank...) due to having 6 points and no NCB. Now pay £1400 for 2 vans/drivers, incl tanks etc and 5 years NCB.

All these people paying £200-£300 will have plenty of NCB so you'll have to pay the higher premium for a few years atleast.

Deegee is spot on until you hit 6-7yrs NCB you won't see a low insurance premium

Ah, didn't realise you're a new driver.
You might be better trying a specialist young insurer.
All the best with it.
