Should have clarified.  Ours are now bolted to a large piece of wood that sits behind the rear wheel arches.  Secure in the event of a crash (the wheel arches would have to be sliced in two for them to move, but movable (with difficulty) as a single unit in case you need to use the van's load space (up to the tank).

I don't have my reels fixed - though I think the best option for me would be one fixed and one loose.  A fixed hose would be a pain if there are loads of corners to go around early in the reeling out (parked cars etc.).  At least with a loose reel I can carry it around early obstacles then take it the short back distance to the van to connect (I have a through the floor and under bumper setup).  The fixed reel coud be used for the many jobs where reeling out is more straightforward.

I have one reel that's fixed to a large piece of 3/4 inch ply. For some of the days (loads of wash and move jobs) I slide it into the back of the van and run the hose out from there.
