« on: February 08, 2015, 05:07:36 pm »
For all those that use the FREE Santander Business Bank watch out!!
As of 01 st May 2015 you can only pay in up to 100 cheques per month
If you go ver that limit they are going to charge you £1 per additional cheque paid in!!

Not to be funny but........

If your paying in more than 100 cheques per month then you can afford the £1 per cheque after that.

Unless of course your paying in cheques that are £3.50 each.

I'm just re thinking this ............

It depends how you run your business I guess.

I find hardly anyone uses cheques these days, but you may have a round built up on leaving pre paid and stamped envelopes?

In this case you may well get hundreds of cheques, which would mean paying hundreds of pounds per month in charges.

I find most people do bacs these days, but I do know of ones who get loads of cheques I suppose.

Anyone accepting such prehistoric methods of payment in such large quantities deserves to pay

u got me worried there for a minute, i am free business banking and i deposit between 200 and 300 cheques per month. you can no longer get free banking anyway and if u were to join now u get free cheque deposits as long as u pay a monthly fee of between £7.50 and £40 depending on how much cash u deposit, up to £1000 cash is £7.50 per month , even if u pay in £3000 a month it will only cost u £12.50 per month with free cheque deposits. It is still by far the best business banking deal available. i will be happy paying the monthly fee. Certainly a lot happier than paying £1 per cheque!

Really? Never did when I banked there?

Santander may be cheap, free in many cases, but they are hopeless. Fine if all is going well, as soon as there is a problem, it's neigh on impossible to get someone who will take any responsibility for anything.

It's been 100 cheques for years though.  It started out at 50 then went up to 100 several years later - where it's remained.  I think the £1 has changed though as it used to be 50p.
I used to almost reach the 100 limit sometimes many years ago but since those days, I have converted many customers to BACS so I never get anywhere near it these days.

I argued this point with the guy opening my account a few years ago. Probably payin around 250 cheques a months.

He advised me to open up a business savings account linked directly to my business account as there are no limits on cheques with savings accounts.

It's worked for me for over 3 years now.  ;D

Santander are absolutely useless with business bank accounts. After 12 months I finally got my business account straight with them. Totally hopeless when it comes to business bank accounts. I opened up a personal account with them and still pay cheques in and refuse to have a business account with them ever again and they accept I will NEVER have a business set up with them as I've told them THEY ARE USELESS WITH BUSINESS ACCOUNTS every time they ask me to open one so they just carry on paying them into my personal account which I pay my tax to the Inland revenue every month. Go with any bank except Santander when it comes to business accounts. Personal accounts are fine as they are done locally. Business accounts are done elsewhere, (not local). Santander couldn't hold a pee up in a brewery when it comes to business accounts and I remind them every time they even suggest opening a business account !!!

I agree that they are not clued up with business accounts.  However, there are two reasons I stick with them - for now.
1) I have totally free business banking with them (up to specified limits) because I have one of those old accounts that were advertised as "free business banking forever".  If they ever try to change that (like they tried on a previous occasion), I will be straight to the ombudsman and the advertising standards authority.
2) It's easy to deposit cheques out of hours via ATM as I'm only a five minute walk from the branch.

For my BACS stuff, I use a free, FSB Co-op small business account.

Unfortunately, a few years ago, Santander removed, without warning, all customer references from incoming BACS payments - meaning that I sometimes didn't know who had paid.  So I switched all the BACS to Co-op.  It took Santander about two years to re-instate the references by which time they had lost that part of my business.  So now, they get all my expensive to handle transactions and Co-op get the easy stuff.  Depositing cheques with Co-op is trickier so I take the most convenient bit from each account and use it.

Bank of Scotland don't charge a penny, you just need £5000 in your accountant minimum. Small amount to your average window cleaner.
