Hi all!
I just received a call asking if I could go and have a look at a cream Polypropylene carpet where a child vomited after eating some tomato soup. There are 2 hand sized stains.
The lady has tried to clean it using a steam cleaner/mop.
The accident happened on monday.
What do you think the chances are of removal?
I have multiple prochem and solutions products.
I have standatd NCCA training but no advanced stain removal training.
Do you think the use of heat to originally try and clean it would have permanantly set the stain?
Thanks in advance.

She may have caused fibre damage with the steam. However best way to proceed would be to apply an enzyme based spotter, allow 10 minutes dwell time then rinse out and repeat if needed. If any colouring remains then treating with Dyegone should remove it.

I am going to take a look at it tomorrow.
She states she just used a steam mop with a carpet attachment (no extraction method).
I have no idea what was expected to happen to the stains.
I guess she just expected it to disappear...??

She's probably pushed it further down into the pile and underlay.
Will need to check the backing and see if part of the underlay needs replacing, if not you have potential for problems later with odour,especially once it warms up a bit reactivating the bacteria.

Would it be best to flush out  using cold water?

Yes flush with cold water first. Then try some enzymes like ashbys enzyme spotter, enzall, pre enzyme solution etc and rinse with cold water then try some acid at around 8-1 or something like urine spotter  or even pet stain spotter from craftex and extract with cold water and if its not gone by then try some dye gone, dye x or sod mets. If none of that work then go home and give up....

Seriously !!
Easiest job on the planet , it's polyprop.

Spray with strong chlorine bleach, the stain will disappear immediately any bacteria present will die through shock oxidisation.

Then just extract, flush clean.

Job done.

Can anyone really visually identify the fibre of a carpet?

Usually it's the other way round.....they say their living room carpet is a quality Wilton wool carpet and straight away you can see it a polypropylene Belgian Wilton.

I would never take a customers word for the type of carpet it is especially when you need to start doing advanced stain removal, they say it poly but they get confused, the poly carpet is in the other bedroom this one is nylon.

it's no defence when you bleach the crap out of it and say......"but you said it was polypropylene!!!"
