"A new fibre that is 100% dirt and soil resistant, were nothing binds to the fibre so eventually any dirt or spill dries  and it's residue is vacuumed out of the carpet."
I think that is pretty unlikely because the carpet manufacturers know that if they developed such a product they would be shooting themselves in the foot, sales wise, as their sales are partly down to carpets wearing, getting too dirty to clean, or stained beyond redemption.

The Man In The White Suit (1951) starring Alec Guiness

Plot summary(from IMDB):

"The unassuming, nebbishy inventor Sidney Stratton (played by Alec Guiness)creates a miraculous fabric that will never be dirty or worn out. Clearly he can make a fortune selling clothes made of the material, but may cause a crisis in the process. After all, once someone buys one of his suits they won't ever have to fix them or buy another one, and the clothing industry will collapse overnight. Nevertheless, Sidney is determined to put his invention on the market, forcing the clothing factory bigwigs to resort to more desperate measures... "

I suppose a similar analogy would be car manufacturers coming up with an engine that ran on water or air-I don't think the oil companies would be too happy and no doubt would buy up all the patents.

The reality is our industry is evolving every day, better machines, better chems, and better training and education means we will evolve with it.
We was told carpet cleaning was finished as more and more people had wooden / laminat floors fitted during the 90's but the first thing people brought after fitting those floors was a nice big rug.
When I first started back in 81, carpet & upholstery cleaning was just that carpet and upholstery cleaning, look at us now, rug cleaning, leather cleaning restoration, hard floor cleaning, mattress cleaning, oven cleaning.
I think the future looks good. Roll on the next 20 years,
