How long has he been trading under this ID as I recall not so long ago he was on South Coast .

Think he has done quite well developing and then selling over the years

Good luck to him - it's a ready made business. How much is a franchise these days with no existing client base ?

This gives hope to others, as most people seem to think that an owner/operator's business is only worth what the van and equipment can fetch.

Hmmm
BEWARE BUSINESS SALES AGENTS VALUATIONS  ;)
the reason most owner operated carpet cleaning set ups sell for equipment value only is market forces - i.e.  thats all they are worth,

I know Jason is one of the smarter operators but hope he hasn't fallen foul of a classic business sales practice which is to quote a totally unachievable/unrealistic price and then get advertising money from desperate clients, IF NO MONEY AS GONE TO THE AGENT THEN THATS FINE.

I worked for one of the largest business sales agents in the country in the late 80's early 90's,
and they made their money from signing up and not from selling business's ie taking circa £400 advertising money from clients up and down the country who had little more then a wage giving business and no hope of selling; however they signed up over 20 - 30 businesses every week collecting a minimum £8000 in advertising contributions from said businesses and therefore made a small fortune, with minimal overheads, they then franchised their model and made even more (RTA business sales)
Another shocking/nonsensical valuer of businesses are accountants but thats another long story.
Basically no contracts, no residual/contractual income and where the owners own labour produces the profit as very little goodwill value if any.
If you can go away for a fortnight and still earn the same money as when you are working in your business then you have a business thats got some goodwill value, if when you go away it costs you £800 - £1200 per week in lost earnings then you are just self employed and have no real goodwill value.
Anyone with capital would look for a business that pays them regardless of their presence in it, only those with nothing would be at all interested in a business that is solely depending on the owners labour.
Just general points regarding the carpet cleaning industry which as to be one of the worst business models in history, way way below domestic cleaning, office cleaning and window cleaning that are all scaleable, repeat and highly sort after.  ;D
IMHO if an OWNER/OPERATOR goes out cleaning every day to get that 31,000 profit his business is worth
£25,000 TOTAL
If he sits at home  and manages quotes/schedules/marketing etc with others cleaning and still earns £31,000 then it is worth £45000 - Just my opinion

We have been approached several times over the last few years from companies offering to "sell" our business for us with various valuations of what it is worth............ all for the one off advertising fee of ONLY £20.000 (+vat)  ;)  Thanks but when I come to sell I'll look for a different avenue

Yes the client database is all well and good but if they don't like you for any reason then your out....wouldn't want to buy it based on goodwill.
It says advanced bookings are in with it.....they booked Jason 'cos he did a good job last time but then you turn up?
Impossible done straight away, miracles can take a little longer.

Judging by the amount of carpet cleaners who start and then sell up 6 months later as they can't make a living then not as easy as most people think.

I've been in the industry around 4 years although took a 6 month break and had to start again.  I'm not far off that profit now and also starting hard floors next year, or should i say re-starting it after doing a refresher course with Marble Life last year.

Read somewhere on the forums that there are a lot of carpet cleaners out there only earning around £14K and i have seen carpet  cleaning businesses for sale and apparently established for many years and yet only making around £20k profit or less and they still expect it to sell for nearly £30k.

I think the secret of this industry is persistence to get through the fist few lean years and go through a sharp learning curve (marketing wise).

yep, marketing is the point, cost me a lot to try nearly everything, newspapers, leaflets, desk at shopping center etc etc, cost me a thousands, but well spend money to learn to be better later, and the best I did was selling a lot vouchers which gave me a lot regular customers and a lot training with low risk when working on trashed carpets for voucher customers in 2013.. Now will propably end up with google adwords and hope that carpet cleaners network will also work well for me.
