Shurflo pump de while in use?
« on: December 14, 2014, 08:38:49 am »
Just lately my shurflo when I put it up to 99 when I'm filling buckets etc goes to de and cuts out so I have to reduce the flow, I know my battery was dying  as I was getting low batt to here and there so I replaced it with a brand new leisure batt fully charged and tried again yesterday and it was still dead ending at 99, it doesn't stop me from working as I obviously use the controller at lower flow usually 30ish, I've tried an auto calibration and it's giving me 33.
Now I'm wondering could it be because I've put a heater in the line and it's slowing flow or could the pump be dying of old age as it's very old, I have a new one to go in but it didn't seem to have the same charactistics as this ie that takes time to shut off and seem to take time building flow up, I've stripped that down cleaned it up and going to adjust the pressure switch screw up the same as the old one as they was really different positions.
Is there anything else I can check?

Are you trying to use flow 99 with a cal of 33 ?

Yeah that's the auto cal setting so I presume it should work on all flows without de'ing, it was fine in the past?

You need to increase your pressure setting. This goes to all the "my pump is cutting out" posts too ;D It's winter, everything in the system, pipes etc have little or no flex in them to absorb any pressure thus the controller/pressure switch will detect pressure sooner. ;)

ok changed pumps over and still doing it but i'll up the pressure cal like you say and try that maybe its even the fact ive put the heater in the line now so that could be causing some flow issues at high flow? the next issue or if its related is even with my new leisure battery fitted its flashing low batt and i can see the voltage display dropping into low 11's, ive double checked all electrical connections and now im wondering if its the actual battery clamps im using as they was cheapies i bought so think i'll replace these as theres nothing else in the line electrically that could cause problems, all nice clean connections!!

I was just about to say- check all your connections but you are obviously on the ball with these. Can't explain the voltage drop provided you're using the correct grade wire etc but the DE is most probably a combination of the colder weather & your heater added to the line of flow.

cheers fella, im thinking its these battery clamps i got off fleabay, the new leisure batt has the threaded battery posts too so im going to fasten the connections straight onto the batt this way and see how things go.
the systems been fine since i fitted it but this last few weeks its been playing up, im due a new van soon so system will be rewired with fresh wire and all new connections and see how that goes.

Do you  realize that your water heater also has a flow control. I had the same happen to me a week ago and then realized I had close the flow down on the heater thinking it was something else. Try turning  the settings numptys on  your heater while the pump is on.

As ChumBucket and Slap dash, The boiler will effect the pressure and flow in the system so calibration may need to be higher to make the control less sensitive and take longer to DE the pump.

Running the pump at 99 with a Cal of 33 will also mean the system is running at a much higher pressure with the pump drawing higher current. This means the system is running at higher levels than the control expects and you are more likely to see the pump cycle in/out of DE

cheers Ian, dont know exactly what i did last night but i had a slight leak from the outlet side of the pump so ended up fitting a tap quick release fitting and recalibrated and it came down to 30, i also adjusted the allen screw in the pressure switch so it matched my old pump and today its been bang on, not excess pressure when you start or pressure tailing off just nice and consistant, it cuts in and out when flow stopped started perfect.
only issue is this de at 99 but as i dont use it as this flow rate im happy to keep it as it is!
