The scurrilous innuendo against him was pretty disgusting IMO - particularly by The Sun.  It appeared that their greatest "evidence" against him was that he had dyed his hair pink and some unsubstantiated quotations from one (possibly more) of his female students.  It might have developed like the Jill Dando/Barry George case - find a local who might be regarded as a weirdo and make the rest of the circumstances fit (though I concede that, as her landlord, there already was some link between Jeffries and the victim).  Fortunately for Jeffries, it transpired that there was a far more viable suspect waiting in the wings.  I wondered at the time how that might have gone if this wasn't the case.
Newspapers are not legally obliged to shut up about suspects until a formal police charge has been made.  This can mean that they have to get their allusions in early.  This often leads to them being badly researched and possibly embellished in order to sell more papers.
I accept that it was reasonable to question Jeffries and even hold him.  He had access to the property and, briefly, may have been the police's most promising line of enquiry.
IIRC, Jeffries sued the paper, didn't he?
