just wondering if any one knows of any free health and safety courses you can do online and get a certificate that would benefit us as window cleaners?

you can do iosh courses but i don't think they can be done online. Too easy to  copy and paste stuff. NEBOSH is further up the ladder. Go onto www.hse.gov.uk and read over stuff on there and get yersel  familiar with  H&S topics

The trouble is there are many training courses out there that give you a certificate at the end but it's not always worth the paper it's written on if it's not a recognised qualification.
So in that regard you are probably better off taking a widely recognised IOSH training course.

Work At Height Training

I used to teach this course. It isn't difficult by any means. Call your nearest college and ask to speak to someone in construction. Explain the situation, obviously you won't want to do a full NVQ in construction & the built environment. Ask for last years test paper and ask to sit the test. It'll cost you about £50. If you've been working for any length of time at all really, you'll get most of the answers as its mainly common sense. Failing that, most colleges do an evening class, ask for a course that will include WAHR and pick the one you fancy, or the cheapest if you don't fancy any. You're bound to have a good laugh and could end up making a coffee table for your nana or something.

So as a window cleaner the waha should be one to consider or is it not worth it
Would it benifit me .
Would having this give me the edge of any contracts over some one that does not have this ?

I have never been asked for any of these type things when I have been quoting commercial work but no doubt there will be a few companies out there who do require some sort of certificate.
The majority are only bothered about saving money

When you do a lot of commercial window cleaning I think having a good training certificates do help you

In the last five years I have had to justify when tendering how competent I am at my job so all my training certs did come in handy

Just been accredited for the FWC SAM scheme ,now this has already helped my keep three top commercial jobs

Just got two sets of paperwork to do about reviewing approved suppliers and it askes for training records

What ever training you want to do ask yourself how will it help my business
Do I want to expand my business with a different type of customer

I am a sole trader mainly commercial

NVQ/QCF level 2
Ladders and WFP IOSH   FWC
IOSH managing safely
NEBOSH general certificate
PTTLES teacher trained
Teach IOSH training FWC
Training instructor

As I have said before there is no right or wrong when it comes to winning jobs.
Obviously any training you do have  will give you the slight upper hand and looking after yourself,staff and customers should always be a priority.
I know lads who are cleaning schools of ladders with not even public liability insurance,I spoke to a window cleaner this week who is in his 70's and he was laddering a small block of flats up to second floor for a managment company.On the other side I have had tiny  jobs ask for all sorts of health and safety paper work and proof of insurance.
Some company's take health and safety very seriously and this is a good thing ,and all in all will only benefit us as an industry but some could not care less.

You may all so want to look at safe contractor and chas to widely recognised accreditations.

An evening class could cost you less than £50. Over a number of weeks.
Sitting the paper alone will probably be more expensive than doing an evening class. But the class will obviously be time spent. Perhaps 8 weeks of 3 hours an evening. But you will learn another skill at the same time.

Oh, no. Sorry. I thought it was just the WAHR stuff you were talking about.
I know nothing about an NVQ in shining.
Can't imagine the final exam would be difficult though
