1st day with vanmount setup,aahhhh
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:23:07 pm »
 :-\ :-X
what a headache,   compared to just getting backpack out and walk with trolley,   stop and clean.
first of all no power, looking at setup and wondering whats wrong.
wire fell out of inline fuse,  fixed that and powered up.

i have a tap on pole hose, 6mm  but ive added my tap from my old backpack, a strong one.
pulling the pole hose , dragging 8mm reel hose   meant the weight kept pulling the pole hose out of the pole hose tap.    :'(
the tap was out of a 6mm hose on my old backpack,    clipped it into my 8mm microbore hose,  slight drips    ill need to get a 8mm tap for reel hose.  and get it tightened onto reel to stop waterflow when needed.
kept getting drips in van,        ??? scratching my head.     drips coming out of the swivel connector on the reel.
then it dawned i put no tape around the screw thread.
by this time water was getting under sheeting cover.

out come backpack to finish off work.
got home had to strip all gear out to dry wooden flooring.
hair dryer out,    IF YOU BLOW IT UP I WANT A NEW ONE.  ok i say.

all dried out , rubber floor covering dried out.    GOD i thought,    is it worth it.
dragging a long hose around.  reeling back in,    this is suppose to make my life easier.    ??? ::)rol

does it get better.
need to sort fittings out to stop leaksl

It does get but much better once you work it out.
Couple of cleans and you'll be fine.
I always take the reel out of the van but I only do 3 or 4 moves a day max so it's not an issue for me.

heres a few things that have helped me through experience with a van mount over the years.

LEAVE THE REEL FIXED IN THE VAN THE WHOLE TIME!much easier than taking it out of the van all the time.

CHARGE YOUR BATTERY EVERY NIGHT!keeping your battery topped up keeps it in good condition.

USE 100M 6MM MICROBORE ON YOUR REEL!if your using a cold water system.its much easier to drag around.

you ll get used to it after a while and you ll learn the best way of laying your hose depending on the job your cleaning.

best wishes

Dont pull your hose from the tap if you use a pole hose tap
Go over to the point were your pole hose connects with reel hose and drag it from there

Anything with a thread, ptfe the crap out of them

I'd imagine the change from backpack to van mount is a bit to get used to, but once you get everything right and how you like it, you'll get to a stage were its simply park up, pole out, pull hose and clean
Why don't you have a quick google before making stupid comments?

It can take a while to learn new work habits.  You'll figure out the best way for yourself.  The things you need to think about now will become second nature.  I won't give tips on the "best" way to work because everyone has their own ways that are best for them.

Dont panic JB , it gets a lot easier , im sure Dazmond was the same , if you have to spend a day in the back of the van then so be it , the first thing you need to sort is a water tight system , it sounds like you have pride in your wheels , keep that up .......i was talking to a chap the other day at the back of his transit , i was cringing as i saw pretty much every fitting and joiner leaking like a sponge , i looked to the bit just before the driver seat started and saw a build up of 4 inch or so of water , i asked him if that bothered him at all ......his reply was
" When i get on a hill it will go out the back door wont it "
I saw him again today in a different transit , the reason he gave was an unexplained amount of rust which gave him a big bill to get through the MOT  :o

As for pulling the hose about all day , its a question of running your round different to what you have with a back pack , i just park where i can pull the hose once to the furthest property from me and then do the jobs in an order that will allow me the most direct reel in when all done !

Its a different ball game with a van mount , but its a learning curve , and it has to be thought out as soon as you drive into your chosen street ,

And to put it into context , i got the latest gardiner back pack , my first one , a few months ago , i totally die at the idea of having to lug it about , i do though when i have to , but if the van mount went down i would sack off a poss £150 days work and get the van mount sorted , but thats because i started with van mount , and then had 2 vans out all brimmed with spare bits , if i get a failure im sorted in a very short time .

Stick with it and i reckon you might just bin your backpack !!

It will get easier and it's deff the way to go,.
Regarding leaks etc,I assume you have a DIY system fitted, which is fine but I possibly you learn as you go along .
Personally I'm crap at DIY hence I had a van mounted system fitted by pure freedom three years ago,and not had any problems, but having said that it costs more than a DIY system

Daz, couple of weeks ago you posted that you never work with the rear doors open, always locking them when away from the van. How do you do that if your reel is fixed down?

I'm wanting to fix my reel but having a few expensive poles in the back of the van I'm always too paranoid to leave the doors open. Obviously reeling out then going back to lock the van isn't an option.

Personally, I usually lift the reel out - though there are also jobs where I don't need to - especially if I can park on a drive.  Sometimes there are obstacles (typically car tyres or vegetation) that are hard to maneouvre the hose around so I might position the reel next to such an obstacle then finish unwinding it walking a few feet back to the van.  Ideally, I imagine that one fixed reel and one free reel would be better so that there's a choice.  Everyone develops their own little ways though.

I fitted one hose reel guide to floor of van and another under my bumper, reel is fixed,  left in van
doors locked and pull out reel without returning to van

hi danny i leave one van door open as i use hot water in winter(to let fumes escape).front cab and side door is locked with mesh bulkhead so cant get through to cab.

normally i just take one pole to work(extreme 25).

in spring/summer when im using a cold system and standard microbore i can pull enough hose out the back and lock the doors if need be and go about my work.i rarely do though.

danny it wasnt a couple of weeks ago when i posted that i always locked my van!IT WAS OVER A YEAR AGO!! ;D ;D

With some vans you can shut and lock the doors on the hose without damage or affecting the water flow, particularly if using microbore.

Vw are ok for shutting doors without the hoses been pitched..

Least you dont have to keep changing drums over every 5 minutes when running low on water.
